As someone from Toonzone, I consider myself a fan of animation. Whether it be CGI, anime, claymation, etc., the medium can be a great source of storytelling and art. So in short, this thread's basically to talk about cartoons.
  2.
Has anyone seen 'Up'? I heard it's good...
  3.

I just saw it today. It is good, but I cried so much…make sure to bring tissues or something if you watch it, just in case.

  4.
Yeah, the first ten minutes were incredibly sad.

As sad as Toy Story 2?
It’s surprising how emotionally affecting animations can be.

  5.
Toy Story scared the hell out of me. I don't know why...
  6.

    Its those eyes. Those eyes…

...Aaaanyway, I loves me some cartoons :D

  7.

I didn’t like Toy Story either. Too scary. And I saw it AFTER TS2 came out. Shrek and The Emperor’s New Groove rock. NOT Kronk’s New Groove. That was just stupid.

  8.

I watched Up and didn’t cry once, while my mother was sobbing.

I must have no heart. (also it was the best Pixar movie ever.)

  9.

Anyone plan on seeing The Princess and the Frog?

  10.

No, no, no. Best Pixar Movie Ever = Cars.

  11.
    I liked Finding Nemo. :D

    The Incredibles for me.

  12.
For me, WALL-E's the best out of the bunch.
  13.
I haven't seen UP yet, but so far WALL-E is my favorite. I'm a cartoon and animation nerd, though, so I've seen all of them (except UP) at least twice.

I admit, I have kind of a crush on Pixar. Up was great, though I sobbed through good chunks of it. (That’s nothing new though, most Pixar movies do that to me.) Overall I think my favorites are Wall*E and The Incredibles. Wall*E is just such a wonderful character, and I think overall The Incredibles is the most easily re-watchable.

No Ben 10 or Danny Phantom, for me, but I’m very much a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Great show, crossing my fingers for the film.

  14.

SpongeBob and Phineas and Ferb for me, when it isn’t Looney Tunes.

I’m never able to follow shows with actual plots unless I can watch them contiguously. Since I never spring for DVD sets, I usually just watch slapstick comedy.

Oh my goodness- I've wanted to see Up so badly but we couldn't go this weekend- my sister's studying for her SAT II's- but maybe the upcoming weekend after she finished them.

The first thought I had this morning was how sad the opening montage is going to be. I can't wait- I've heard good things from the two sources I trust the most for judgement.

Mainly, I like a lot of stuff by Pixar (the favorite being Wall-E). But Up might change that.

Also, is anyone planning on seeing Ponyo? Its voiced by Miley C's younger sister and the younger Jonas bro or something, which is - points. But I'll probably go seeing as my sister likes that sort of animation.

(By the way, did you guys know Christian Bale voiced Howl in Howl's Moving Castle?! I snicker now everytime I hear "I can't live if I can't be beautiful").
  15.
I'm gonna see Ponyo anyways. Maybe if I can't see their faces I'll be able to accept their voices.
  16.

I loved The Incredibles, mostly because I love it when Superheroes and Villains are put in everyday activities. Anybody seen Venture Brothers? Same genre type, but a bit more like if it was mixed with South Park.

I hope the Avatar movie turns out well. I hated the ending :/

Avatar is the best show ever! But I can’t see the movie turning out well, unfortunately. The world, the immersive world…it just can’t be created in two or three hours. And CGI probably can’t possibly be as good as animation for exciting elemental fight scenes. But I’ll give it a try, all the same.

    Ahh, nostalgia…

  17.

The Dragon Turtle seemed like a stretch to me. Sure, they showed a statue and a picture once per season, but they didn’t elaborate on spiritbending at all. Which is a shame, since they could have swept it in on one of the spirit realm episodes. Just have that face-stealer guy mention it in his episode :/

There was a bit of a God from the Machine with the Lionturtle, but in the end the characters had to make the big decision to end a crisis, so as a device to bring closure to conflict it worked. Coincidence doesn’t have to be deus ex machina, if done right. :)

  18.

Its just that they build up all of this angst in having to kill the guy, and then its “Uhp, nope, magic turtle power ftw”. Cheesed me off =/

Yeah, I think the ending could have been more dramatic if Aang had to kill him, or simply fail. But I don’t think failure was really an option for a children’s TV show, lame. Killing the guy would have been out of character for sure. :/

  19.

    Honestly, I would have prefered it if either;
    A) Aang dies (either beating him and then sacrifices himself, or the Firelord ‘surrendering’, then breaking out some super-lightning and smiting his bald *#&), but the comet has passed overhead, ruining the Firelord’s chances. With his army in ruins and Ba-Sing-Se liberated, the Earth Kingdom is able to strike back and invade the Fire Nation. Cue the next avatar being born…

    B) The Firelord is beaten, but instead of surrendering, tries a last ditch effort of shooting lightning. Aang reflects the lightning, and The Firelord, surprised, takes it in the face. This can either kill or cripple him, but either way he has taken a karmic beatdown.

    But, I don’t write TV shows :D

  20.
I think my favorite Pixar movie might be Finding Nemo. I didn't really like Wall-E all that much. After all the hype, it seemed disappointing. Animation was great, story not so much.

Does anyone here watch South Park or Metalocalypse? (People are so surprised when they find out I like those shows. It must be my innocent face...*looks sweet*)

South Park, yeah. This season’s rather good, but the last two felt like…a checklist of things to make fun of, sorta. (Tourette’s, check. Breast cancer, check. China, Britney Spears? Check, check.) Nothing’s been quite as good as the tenth season, though. That was my favorite.

In terms of Avatar, I think I’m satisfied overall with the ending. I would have ideally preferred for Aang to kill Ozai, but realistically, it just wasn’t going to happen on Nickelodeon. The Magic Lion-Turtle of Answers did bother me most, though; it was introduced much too suddenly, and something along those lines could and should have been introduced earlier.

The Zuko-Azula beat-down was, however, completely awesome. Great ending for one of the best villainesses on TV.

  22.
I have to say, Zuko is the hottest guy in cartoon I HAVE EVER SEEN. Take that as you will ;)

I’ll have to agree with RVL and swenson; both Zuko and Sokka are awesomely lovable, and pretty darn good looking for men of the two-dimensional variety.

In terms of the movie… I don’t know. There is so much potential in the material, if it’s done right, it could be really incredible. I think I’m just going to have continue on with my fingers crossed and hope for the best. At least the Jesse-McCartney-as-Zuko thing didn’t pan out. Dev Patel can at least act, although I would have preferred him for Sokka.

The third season felt sort of rushed towards the end. My favorite parts of the series, though, are during the second season, where all the characters play off each other nicely (especially in ‘The Blind Bandit’ — the fight scene between Toph and Aang makes me smile every time I watch it). The rich and believable characters, who contributed to a moderately intricate story, was what made the show so fun to watch for me.

Hmm. Today, we watched Wall-E in Spanish (since there's no audio, we could have just as easily been watching the Spanish version!) and for some reason, when we got to the montage of Wall-E trying to wake up Eve, I got a little leaky-faucet/weepy.

Lost it as in, burst into sobs :-) I did that a few times, actually… when Wall*E was trying to wake up Eve, when Wall*E got crushed saving Eve and Eve couldn’t find the right chip, when Wall*E lost his memories… I think I even cried during the space-dancing scene because it was so beautiful. For what it’s worth, I don’t usually cry during movies, but Wall*E just made a basket case out of me.

Aww, but that part was so cute! (the accidental crushing part, that is). Anyway, I think its part of the way they set the movie up- visually and musically- that can just capture people.
  28.
Come on, I don't think Wall-E was any better than movies like Finding Nemo. Nemo had an environmental message but no one made as big a deal about it. Plus, it was funny as well as adorable as well. (Can you tell I totally love Finding Nemo? I still quote it sometimes)

You can say the same thing about Wall-E, but that just proves that it didn't bring anything special for me.

To repeat what I said in the animation thread I started before I was notified of this thread:

My favorite animated movie happens to be Tarzan, followed closely by Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Honestly, I don’t care much for the small amount of anime I’ve seen. I don’t understand why the frame rate is so poor for much of it. The only anime I recall liking was Princess Mononoke.

  41.

    Hater.

    Indeed.

  43.

    I don’t like anime either.

    Ducks from flying objects

I like other types of animation, though I don’t really like it when they animate things that are meant for mostly adults (few exceptions, The Simpsons is an exception).

I don’t like anime either. Its not something I enjoy.

  46.

While I’d like to throw it a bone, anime does have its flaws. I can’t get into any of the shonen series. Most of the more recent shows out there are pretty average. And Japan’s made more harem fanservice crap than the world will ever need.

Still, there are some good shows out there like Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist (both versions), Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Paranoia Agent, and plenty more.

  47.

I agree almost absolutely with Marquis De Carabas.

    Why don’t I whole-heartedly agree? I’m indecisive.

  48.

It’s like any other medium. None are exempt from Sturgeon’s Law.

  49.

Why can’t animation be more mature? Don’t you have Adult Swim and all that on Cartoon Network?

(And yes, South Park is awesome, as is Metalocalypse)
