Don’t I always say vanguard is best class? Because if I didn’t before, it is. It always is.

@TheArmourer – I actually own both, but I’ve never really played much of either, just a bit of singleplayer of each.

  1.

I’m a little annoyed, because apparently Valve is updating the L4D campaigns to L4D2. >.> It’s fun. Like, stay up to two in the morning fun.

My problem always was that I’m, well, kinda a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror games, so I never liked to play them on my own. But at the same time, I’m not very good at them, so I wouldn’t want to just join a co-op game without having some practice first.

Wait, what now? Like, getting rid of the L4D campaigns completely?

And yeah, awesome games. They’re creepy as all get out and violent, but fun.

  2.

No, their porting the first campaigns to the second. So I’m annoyed that I bought the first.
@swenson It’s not super hard, and you’re probably smarter than a bot. (thought the bots are rather good) Trust me, I have covered for complete idiots, and we still made it through.

  3.

It’s convenient if you’re buying it for other people, though. I bought L4D2 for a bunch of my friends on Halloween when it was on sale and didn’t need to mess with buying the original.

I mean, you can still play it if you just hate melee weapons or Spitters or something, but overall L4D2 has superior mechanics and I’d rather play the old campaigns on it.

My problem always was that I’m, well, kinda a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror games, so I never liked to play them on my own. But at the same time, I’m not very good at them, so I wouldn’t want to just join a co-op game without having some practice first.

It’s actually more intense/pulse-pounding than it is outright scary, I’d say, just because there’s usually not that much time to dwell on things. There are some exceptions, though. The extreme downpour segment of the Heavy Rain campaign still spooks the shit out of me.

I’d say just get some of your friends to run with you through the campaigns on co-op before you try open multiplayer. That’s what I did with my cousin.

Well, I can confirm that Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is fun, all right. I can also confirm that playing vanguard in my usually cavalier die-every-ten-seconds style does not work very well in multiplayer.

    Welp.

Without spoiling anything, I just want to say that when Mass Effect 3 is done, half the children in the galaxy are going to be named after me. I swear everyone I meet with children is like “we’re going to name them after you!”

Then again, an entire galaxy full of people called Shepard would be pretty awesome…

Yeah, that was a fun bug to try to work around. What’d you do to fix it? I used the Gibbed Save Editor to get the values, then recreate a face and get the face code from that. There was some instructions on how to do that on Livejournal, I think, or at least that’s where I got them.

  7.

I used Gibbed to get a YAML file and uploaded it to another site, which spit out a face code. The hair and eye color were wrong, but everything else was fine. As a sidenote, an hour or so in, and this game seems much, much better than ME1 or ME2.

And you haven’t even gotten to the good parts yet. _

I definitely agree with you, though. The writing and voice acting is generally very good in ME3, I like the story and locations, I like the upgrades in graphics (contrary to my initial impression from the demo), and I thought the combat was more fast-paced, which isn’t a bad thing.

I'm sick of MW3. The underhanded opportunistic players, the broken spawning system (the devs refuse to fix), the run-n-gun nonsense, the shoddy maps. Everything's been funneled into a collection of trashy corridor firefights. No sight lines longer than thirty feet, making sniper rifles useless. Everything has to be so cluttered and convoluted, it's pointless. As far as lone MP goes, I'm through with it. Done.

So, I decided for a change of pace and picked up Battlefield 3 for half price. Turned out to be $30 wasted. Hit and miss lag, pathetic hit detection (clearly carried over from Medal of Honor), visual glitches, mostly useless teammates, squad spawn insta-death, wonky controls (Do I really need to swing my weapon way out to the side _just_ to get move from prone to crouched? Is it necessary to pull back from a sniper scope _just_ to chamber a new round? Why is it I can't hit the START button to _leave_ the MP pause menu?). Does it look better than MW3? Yeah, except that only morons would make an FPS that requires precise aiming to roll at anything less than 60 frames. And the recoil? I don't understand the demand for high recoil; it's irritating enough playing as a soldier handling his weapon with string. Not only are soldiers trained to subdue muzzle climb and the like, but firearm designs have allowed manufacturers to reduce--if not remove altogether--significant recoil and muzzle climb. And what's this talk about _teamwork_? I've yet to play a game where anyone else even has a MIC. And then half the team is waiting at the respawn screen _just_ to spawn into a jet.

No. Absolutely no. As far as I'm now concerned, Activision, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, Raven, Treyarch, EA, DICE, and Danger Close are all guilty until proven innocent. Hurry up and get here, _Future Soldier_.

As far as I know, it doesn't. I don't have the numbers, but there's a big difference in the fluidity of the visuals between the two. I could be mistaking that for each game's respective engines. That's per consoles, though. I think fps can be tweaked on PC.

    bq. But, but Mirror’s Edge!

I'll defer on that one, but only because it's not an annual military FPS. And I've only played the demo.

Hey swenson, what vanguard weapon loadout do you use, out of curiosity? I’ve mostly settled on the Mattock and the Eviscerator, but I’ve thought of trying out other shotguns just for curiosity’s sake alone.

You should just use the lightest weapon possible. IIRC the heavier the weapon the longer your charge cooldown is.

  10.

Yeah, though with my current loadout Charge refreshes in only 3 or 4 seconds, unless I do one of those big punches which basically refreshes the cooldown right away. I’m thinking of just switching to a pistol and nothing else, since I can both shoot guys at range and attach a melee booster.

I can’t recall off the top of my head, but I did a shotgun and an SMG for longer range/shields (especially earlier in the game, when I didn’t have charge upgraded all the way). The mods I used were for accuracy and damage. I considered the melee damage one, but I wanted accuracy more (because shotguns have such short range T_T). A lot of that was drawn from my multiplayer experiences, though, and may not have been the best loadout for singleplayer.

Although in multiplayer, sometimes I think I should just ditch the SMG altogether, because it’s so easy to just charge, shoot, nova, charge to regain shields, repeat until everything is dead and you have stolen everyone else’s kills.

@sansa – by the end of the game, I was using the Disciple shotgun and the Tempest SMG. I’m not sure how far you got into ME3 yet, but I got the Disciple during the mission where you see Samara. It has very high accuracy and low weight, which were huge selling points for me. I like having some range, and the lower weight was nice because I use powers constantly.

As for the Tempest, I liked the high rate of fire and decent accuracy, but I never played around with other weapons much, so I can’t really compare it to anything else. In ME2, I always preferred the Locust, but I didn’t try it in ME3.

I’m going to be on the fence on this one. “enhanced” could just mean the same game with model graphics and new voices. I would be highly opposed to them replacing the voice actors.

It seems like they’re just adding new characters and quests and leaving the game alone for the most part. They will be using the ToB source code for BG1, however, which means the spell, class and combat system would be entirely different. They’re supposed to release screenshots next week.

the Disciple shotgun and the Tempest SMG

I do have the Discipline, though I haven’t tried it. The Tempest was my preferred SMG when I was still using one, but at this point I’m pretty much just using the Arc Pistol with no other weapons. I’m thinking of switching to the Paladin, though.

That makes me annoyed all over again, though. They put an ending on the game, the ending they wanted to put on the game. Sure, it sucked in a myriad of ways, but it was their ending. If that was really the ending they intended and wanted, then they shouldn’t change it just because people are crying about it. And if it wasn’t the ending they wanted, then why did they release the game with it in the first place?!

Not that this will stop me from buying alternate ending DLC. Or a DLC where you play as Aria, which keeps getting rumored.

I don’t even play Assassin’s Creed, yet I am so thrilled about that game. Assassinations in the Revolutionary War. What could be a cooler topic to base a game on?!

On a different note, I installed some new skins for TF2… specifically, female Medic, Heavy, and Spy skins. They are extremely well done and completely awesome. Female Medic in particular just looks really awesome—she’s got glasses, the long coat, all the hallmark Medic stuff, but has a unique look of her own. Anyway, I just got done playing some TF2 with them, and it was pretty sweet.

I feel like female Heavy would be terrifying.

    bq. Are those ingame?

They are. The game looks fantastic thus far, and I'm impressed with how the dev team's been handling this cycle. They're aiming to release, according to creative director Alex Hutchinson, "Assassin's Creed 3.5".

I’m still bummed they never did a Bakumatsu-era Japan installment. I guess the setting would make it too easy.

Hutchinson, I think, mentioned that setting and time period as almost being a video game trope (to him, if no one else). I'm actually quite excited about the changes, especially in terms of the wilderness and climate.

Yeah, I mean I guess I can see why you’d want to avoid doing something obvious, but the primary means of affecting political change during that time period was assassinating political figures in the streets. That, and you’ve got encroaching foreign powers as a point of entry for the Templars, and cool buildings to climb around.

I’m sure it’s still gonna be awesome anyway though.

I don’t really follow AC, but didn’t they just release some AC game not too long ago? I remember seeing all these trailers that featured an old Ezio or something.

Patrice Desilets, who was creative director on the first two Assassin's Creed games (and essentially the brainchild behind the concept, iirc), left Ubisoft either during or after the development of _Assassin's Creed 2_, and I think it had to do with Ubisoft's decision to annualize the series. As if we needed more indication as to how _Call of Duty_ is poisoning industry standards. So, after AC2, they released _Brotherhood_ and _Revelations_ in 2010 and 2011, both of which focused on Ezio.

Speaking of which: Robert Bowling resigned as Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward. After the fracas with West and Zampella, and the Modern Warfare trilogy wrapping, I can't say this is a huge surprise.

@sansa re: female heavy: the designer based her look on WWII-era female Soviet snipers. You want to see an intimidating woman? Look up some pictures of them!

On Assassin’s Creed, I never could understand the fixation on Ezio. Yeah, Renaissance-era Italy was a really cool time in history and had some very neat buildings, but there’s so much of history out there to play with! Why would you focus on just one time period?

It was almost as if they were trying to make a character that was the lighter side of Batman (wealthy playboy with an alter ego), but I never really liked how he came across. Too slick and debonair. I like that they basically told a life story, I just don't know what made Ezio so great. I preferred Altair.

Curious to see what they do with Connor.
