    I can’t watch the video because I’m at work, so I’ll ask you instead—what are the rings?

    The rings are to intimidate the enemy, kind of like a cacophony of jangling bells. Traditionally the rings will have short horse hair tassels on as well to confuse/distract and disguise movement.

    The Chinese were quite fond of putting rings on swords, they believe the noise drives away evil spirits.

    The ‘modern’ style Ghost Head Sword is a bit broader towards the end:

    And is a close cousin (and often confused with) the Goose Wing Sword, which only has one bell/tassel:

    the extended bit at the back can be used for hooking the opponent’s weapon, as well as apparently making stab wounds ‘dirtier’, although I’m not sure I understand how when it’s so far back.
