I simply thought we should move this from the feedback thread to elsewhere. What’s the backstory of II? How did Sly get involved? Why is Anti-Shurtugal called ‘the grandfather of this site’?Where was DEM and why did everyone move away from it?

Please answer these and any more!!!

    I want to know too!
Consider this thread a supplementary world-building book to support the main novel of the site.

    Lol I dunno Nate.

    It goes something like this:

Imdb – AntiShurtugal – [insert eDrama here] – DEM – II

  4.

    Now elaborate. PLEEEZE!

I know. Anyway. Back to the backstory.

If this is a writing site, how come it started at IMDb?

  8.

    But that’s cheating!

True, and in going so far as to cheat, she’s just added more fuel to the shipping wars.

Presumably it started with discussion on the Eragon/Twilight/whatever movies, then developed into one on the books and their shortcomings, then someone mentioned that they like to write themselves/compared their work to PaoPao/Smeyer’s, and the writing thing was born!
Is that close enough? Or are my psychic sense not on top form today?

  10.

Who said it was YOUR diabolical plot Steph?

    Oops, I said too much.

As for IMDB, i’d wager a guess that their discussion boards probably had something to do with it. (see moldorm’s theory)

  11.

What about the discussion boards, though? What happened, o great sage?

Spanman’s Exhaustive History of This Particular Group of Antis:

Anyway, it started out when it was announced that someone was going to make a movie of Eragon. And so all the fans flocked to IMDb to rave about Eragon. Few stood against them. Two of those few happened to be Shinwolf and Hackslayer (someone tell me if I got this wrong, it’s a bit fuzzy), who went about refuting everyone’s arguments and generally being pretty cool. Soon they got tired of repeating themselves and went off to make a site, which they called Anti Shur’tugal. It was a pretty good site, with quite a few articles and epistles (very well done). Then there was a forum, which was quite large at one time if my memory serves me right. And then, to many people’s great annoyance, Hackslayer and others (Lindpen?) decided that they didn’t have the time/energy to keep it up, so they split it in two, keeping Dog-Eared and throwing Uru’Baen Forums at whoever would take it. It was sort of a falling-out, I guess. =/ So Uru’Baen lasted happily for quite a while (Dog-Eared is still around), and then for reasons I’m not completely sure of, Tanaka deleted UB. It was a devastation known for the Giant Dead Hog banner and neon pink. So we built Magic Sword Forums (renaming it Deus Ex Machina soon after). It’s the smallest forum so far, I think, since we don’t/didn’t have a site attached. And then SlyShy, who was called Esillisar on DEM, started ImpishIdea. I became the New Kewl Thing, and still is. I can’t get on DEM these days because of silly technological things, so I don’t know how it’s faring, really. We have trouble with our resident trolls. ;)

tl;dr version: A few of us made it through several forums dedicated to literary critique – mostly Inheritance – and we’re still alive today (slightly worse for wear).

Shinwolf and silverfirex, otherwise known as Fragon and Hackslayer. And, apparently, I think a lot of the original ASers came from Hacky’s other forum. But, that’s beyond my scope of knowledge.

Soon they got tired of repeating themselves and went off to make a site, which they called Anti Shur’tugal.

Before that was the AS lj (which is still going strong) and the AS Geocities site. It was kinda ugly.

Then there was a forum, which was quite large at one time if my memory serves me right.

It got large, was kinda wee at first.

Hackslayer and others (Lindpen?) decided that they didn’t have the time/energy to keep it up,

Hacky, Fragon— Lind was more behind the scenes, and is incorrigibly lovely and nice. Oh, and they hated everyone. The wrong kind of antis turned up and became a place where inappropriate jokes were made regarding CP and his family.

so they split it in two, keeping Dog-Eared

Trying for a more… professional audience.

throwing Uru’Baen Forums at whoever would take it.

Mostly Stakey and Apollonia took care of it.

then for reasons I’m not completely sure of, Tanaka deleted UB.

Ooh, heavens, no. Tanaka left ages before that. Most everyone started to hate the place again, Stakey and Polly had no interest in trying to look after a group of people that thought it would be cool to make incest jokes between CP and his sister.

So we built Magic Sword Forums

Polly created it after I stuck up my hand and said I’d take it off them if they weren’t interested. Otherwise, I think they were going to keep pretending the forum got hacked, and It Wasn’t Their Fault. Honest and Bye Bye.

And then I, because I ended up hating dem (longer story) name changed it into carrotstick, told everyone I’d deleted it, then told them the new url and migrated over here permanently. Because quite frankly, this forum actually has an interest in discussing writing, Inheritance and Twilight and, quite radically, people are nice.

But, yer, apparently (according to Dr. A. XD), when that guy started asking questions and then people started bitching and complaining about Hacky and her crew, someone called them all over to the board (according to Tanaka? mebbe?) to Come And Look At This. They did. And that’s when the arguing started.

Yeah. Because I'm the great destroyer.
  23.

It has alliteration. It involves imps. It is pure awesome.

  24.

We pitched a bunch of names, voted, and Impish Idea won.

It all started about two years and a couple months ago when GC got banned at Uru’baen. The reason escapes me now, getting into trouble was kind of his thing until Paladin stole his limelight. So GC contacted me, two Aussies and a Mexican, all of whose contact I lost to Circumstance’s nefarious hands and ridiculous time differences. Oh, and Rocky came in a little later. Hmph. Like, two days. But still.

So yeah. GC was pissed about his ban and through jealousy wanted to one up Anti-Shurtugal at their game and create a empire of critical criticalnes spanning a much wider range of topics than Eragon. And so we began to work, our little Not So Perfect which-I-refuse-to-spell-with-a-‘k’-to-this-day began to grow. And, just as it was coming close to the unveiling, Mr Big Man GC up and disappeared for six months. We slowly drifted our own ways, too. Then he returned after a half-year hiatus to witness the rise and fall of the largest boar in the world and the pretentious dickhead who shot it. When Deus Ex Machina was created, we felt like drifters, as though we were lost in an ocean of porn and cute captioned cat pictures that should’ve gone out of style five years ago. We had no place to lay anchor and call home.

Then GC brings up NSP again and I tell him to shut up because, dude, it didn’t work out before, it’s not going to work out again. He insisted though.

    It didn’t work out.

He disappeared again, this time I think it was after one of his and Paladin’s many, many lover’s spats about The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

Then Matt picked up the captain’s hat* and

*which he borrowed from River Island, my future trilby

and led us to shore using mystical navigational skills taught to him by a bored straight sailor at a gay bar ten years prior. When we landed ashore we all had a good laugh and said, “What and Impish Idea!” We shared a laugh with our great dane and the easily amused audience, winked at the camera as it closed up on us one last time and toasted to Matthew behind the scenes – we drank vimto because it kinda looks like wine and like half of us are underage (but not me, I’m 18).

Huh. I knew part of the history of AS, UB, and DEF (I’m not going to get into it, because I’d rather forget those days, but I was actually once a hard-core anti-fan. Then I realized that radical hatred of Eragon was retarded and realized I didn’t actually dislike the books, I was just jumping on the bandwagon. So I decided to change to mild dislike due to actual reasons other than “BCUZ TEHY“R BADD”.). I was around (by “around”, I mean I was mostly a lurker that hopefully everyone has forgotten, and no, I’m not giving out my username) when AS split UB off, and… yeah. There was a lot of hatred against AS for that one. As I recall, it just felt like being completely abandoned, and I wish(ed) they’d simply deleted it and started over, rather than let it drift off to rot like it did.

Then I sort of quit the whole anti-fan thing, anyway, and only very very recently ended up here through a comment made by someone else on a different site/StumbleUpon. And I liked the crowd (you’re all much nicer than everyone on UB, you have legitimate reasons for liking/disliking books, you can debate without getting angry, and you like the same things I do) so I stuck around.

    /my story

I remember Tanaka. And Brienne. And those are literally the only two names I remember. Wasn’t there someone named… Warthorde? Good grief, I don’t remember anything! Then again, I blocked most of it from my memory, so I suppose it’s understandable.

They did. The IMDB rants begat the LiveJournal escapade, which eventually begat the famous site Anti-Shurtugal. Contemporaneously, Anti-Shurtugal Forums was established, eventually renamed Uru'baen Forums. Dog-Eared was created as an exclusive forum, causing confusion and strife until the plug was pulled on Uru'Baen.

Another forum was established as a replacement for UBF, which has seen its fair share of drama and similar existence woes.

After the fact. There was quite a while where UB and DEF existed side by side, and I think a lot of hatred would have been avoided if UB had simply been deleted, rather than split off.

Then again, I know very little of the later story and virtually none of the behind-the-scenes drama, so maybe it wouldn’t have helped.

I'm the opposite. I think it would've been better had DE never been created. That's where the strife actually originated; the original administrators left UBF to run DE, and members thought they were being abandoned. Anti-Shurtugal was a co-anchored site for both DE and UBF until the latter was sunk. The replacement, DEM, left ties to AS, while DE maintained them, which I think is where this notion of DE being more significant is coming from.

while DE maintained them, which I think is where this notion of DE being more significant is coming from.

DE was the official forum for AS, they were fed up with the type of people the movement was attracting and tried to lump us off with a forum, with DE intending to be a respectable forum for new people to come and post and to not let in the lower elements of ASF. Call that exclusive if you want, I see it as common sense. You’re as professional as your followers.

and members thought they were being abandoned.

They were being abandoned, and for good reason, as Swenson said.

bq. They _were_ being abandoned, *and for good reason*

WRONG. They pulled the plug on _everyone_, not just the ASF bottomfeeders. Yeah, that's a great strategy. Next time I see a roach inside, I'll just burn the whole house down.

@ Diamonte and/or Dan Locke: You don’t happen to have the ninth epistle, do you?

Yeah? so what? it’s up to a community to maintain its own standards. But no one wanted to prove their worth on DE.

Few people were even allowed to _try_.

The system was flawed, they realised that, but, heck, a strict control system, I’m not surprised they thought that was the best way to go ahead.

You don’t need a fire suit. Fire is the purifier. It cleanses and purges us of sin and heresy.
EMBRACE the holy flame of the IMMORTAL GOD-EMPEROR OF MANKIND, and be REBORN!!
