Listening to classical music on NPR...

For the record, classical music is not boring and slow! We are talking, after all, about the composers who invented 64th notes, 128th notes, and fortissimo possibile (as loud as possible. And in one piece, a section marked as this was followed by a section marked “even louder”). And a symphony orchestra can have upwards of 100 players on over 30 instruments. Suddenly a couple of electric guitars and a drummer just aren’t that impressive… [/defense mode]

    Hell no it isn’t.

It’s got to have more than just a lead guitar, a bass guitar, a drummer, and maybe a piano.

A lot of interesting bands consist of just this. To wit: Alice in Chains, Tool, Dream Theater, The Beatles (kind of)... there are more, I’m just not thinking of them. That said, I also appreciate my symphonic metal band with a choir and orchestra tacked on. :D

...I’ve never posted in this thread before, have I?

Erm, I listen to mostly Celtic, folk, and classical music. I have some modern favourites like Karl Jenkins and some anime/game composers (Yoko Kanno, Yasunori Mitsuda), and one of my favourite modern bands is a Japanese called Sound Horizon. I felt like mentioning them because I think they’re a great example of modern music infused with classical sensibility. They’ve changed and grown a lot over the years, but now they normally perform with a combination of classically trained and pop singers, a string quartet, a couple of guitars and a bass, piano, traditional percussions as well as a drum set, and sometimes a harp and/or accordion. Describing it sounds messy, but the result is brilliant. Each of their songs also tells a story, so it’s opera-like in form and sometimes in musical style. To give you an example, this song leans more towards pop-rock and this one more towards classical.

    I love this band <3

I love this jaunty arrangement of Adieu to Old England by the Askew Sisters. It’s such a silly melody, even though it’s about a guy wishing that the world had ended, rather than having to live through so much suffering XD

“I See the Great Mountains” by Cécile Corbel

I really like the harmonies and instrumentals in this version of “Chì mi na mòrbheanna”. Cécile Corbel is starting to catch on me. Some of her music was too pop-ish for my taste on her album Songbook, but Songbook 2 is great, and so was her debut album, Harpe Celtique & Chants du Monde.

I have found the Warthog music from Red vs. Blue. It is SO ANNOYING, but I’m listening to it over and over. I am now convinced that Lopez put it in the Warthog purely to annoy the rest of the team.

But still, think about it, RVL – a sharp, screeching YEEEOOOOWWWWW reverberating against the rounded walls…. it’s terrifying and morbidly fascinating at the same time. Just like Ke$ha’s voice, it makes you drop whatever you’re doing and perk up your ears, going: “Did I really just hear that?”

@ NP and Klutor: Apparently “We R Who We R” is one of her less slutty songs. But still. Not a big fan at all.

That’s okay. I’ve never heard The Fallen, though.
Take Me Out’s music video is very cool, though.

Apparently “We R Who We R” is one of her less slutty songs.

I should bloody well hope so, if the people at your school want to use it for a graduation dance. Then again, if you take a Ke$ha song and make it “less slutty”, you still end up with a Britney Spears song. Or a Holly Valance-song, for that matter.

chorus keeps repeating over and over in my head

That’s the problem with a lot of these songs. They’re just so damn catchy.

Yeah, some on TvTropes say that the tune playing during the Fruity Bar commercial in Serenity is that… but I can’t seem to find that song anywhere. IIRC, it was more funny than annoying.

And, of course, it was followed by a scene of Pure Undiluted Epicness.

The new Sound Horizon album has been leaked >.< I’m not going to download it. I’m skeptical about the album because of the clichéd concept (twisted fairytales) and because I’ve only heard a sample of the first track, and it’s… erm… kind of metal… but I still refuse to listen to more before my copy comes in the mail. Which will be some time in January.
