Mostly because Sly said not too… ;)
A friend of mine more or less kidnapped me last year and forced me to watch Doctor Who. I was never much of a sci-fi fan before that and I thought the Doctor looked creepy, but to my shock I absolutely loved the show. So I’ve watched all of the new series (and will weep bitterly all through the Christmas special) and am working my way through the old ones.
Just enough to rot my brain with.
That will never happen with Doctor Who. It will expaaaand your mind. Especially now that Moffat is at the helm. ALL HAIL STEPHEN MOFFAT.
I’m a nu Whovian, too, I’ve watched some old Who— but, well, it’s never shown on free TV. ;_; And I can’t afford all the DVDs, and then you won’t get the whole of it anyway because of the lost episodes. Sigh.
Anyway, I am a fervant Donna lover. She and Martha are the awesomest companions ever. (YEAH. I SAID IT, ELANOR). I love David Tennant so much, but I look forward to Matt Smith. I can’t wait to see his performance. Admittedly, I think it would be fun to have an older Doctor, but, I’m not counting him out yet.
And I’m not sure if I love SJA more than Doctor Who lately. Because Sarah Jane is just That Amazing.
Yeah, but Sarah Jane doesn’t fight oversized pepper shakers… usually.
MdC, your summary is right on. It pretty much is just that! Although on occasions he takes time out to battle other things, like robots and slime monsters and freaky bat things that enslave British schoolchildren. Oh, and he’s an alien that never really dies, no matter how much you kill him.
I’m apprehensive about Matt Smith… I didn’t watch DW back when Christopher Eccleston was around, so this is my first time losing a Doctor. But I heard the Master might be coming back to kill David Tennant, and he’d better get a fabulous death! I love him so much… and I’m extremely excited about Steven Moffat taking over. Don’t Blink was amazing. (It was also the first DW episode I ever watched!)
Was there sexual tension with Donna, though? I mean, sort of, but not really- neither of them ever was really attracted to the other.
Thank god. That’s why I loved Donna. Sheesh. I think modern day audiences can just maybe cope with the idea that a male and female can be friends, without sexual tension. <<
Yeah, but Sarah Jane doesn’t fight oversized pepper shakers… usually.
Yeah, but the series is fabulously written. The characters are incredibly well acted and crafted out. And it actually has real emotion, and doesn’t rely on swearing and sex to have adult moments. Take when Sarah Jane was telling Luke how she got her phobia of clowns, that was so emotionally heartbreaking. Or when Chrissy talks to Alan while he’s a statue in the Gorgon episodes— they show divorce situations that probably a lot of kids are familiar with and they write them well and sensitively.
I’m apprehensive about Matt Smith…
Judge him on his performance, not because he’s “replacing” David Tennant. I love David as much as the next gal, but he chose to leave.
But I heard the Master might be coming back to kill David Tennant,
Blargh, but of course it will be John Simm. And he wouldn’t have regenerated, because heaven knows audiences are too dumb to cope with a Change Of Faces.
Blink was amazing. (It was also the first DW episode I ever watched!)
I watched Blink once, and I will never watch it again. I don’t want to be desensitised to that absolute, soul-chilling fear that it induced.
Also, Torchwood sucks. :D
Although as they just killed off the two best characters (Toshiko and Owen)
WHOA.
WHOA.
Owen. Best character.
<dies laughing>
Sorry, not for me. The series finale was wasted on me because I spent the whole time cheering and laughing. Not to sound harsh, I used to love Tosh, but not enough to care about their deaths. The best part about that was when someone on lj suggested Owen should come back Murray-style as a talking skull.
I actually like Rhys, he’s way too good for Gwen, whom I never really liked. He’s kind, courageous and such a Nice Man. :)
Aw, heck, I’ll admit it. Rhys is the only one I like out of all of them.
I liked Davros at the Season Finale. He was just so… happy… with what he had made. I don’t mind the Daleks (their voices make me giggle) but I wouldn’t mind taking a break from them for a season’s ending.
Emergency TARDIS’...
Despite appearances, it’s bigger on the inside.
This calls for one of my favourite quotes:
“Aren’t you going to say that it’s bigger on the inside? Everybody else does.”
“Well, that’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?”
“That old lady’s staring.”
“Probably wondering what four people were doing in a small box.”
Bow chicka wow wow.
(it had to be said)
New Torchwood tonight! Maybe they’ll explain how exactly Gwen is the team’s “emotional core”.
The story looks like a rehash of Christmas Invasion/Sound of Drums, though.
With Water of Mars coming out in less than a day, it’s time to dig up this thread.
And here’s a rather controversial video to start off discussion.
I agree with most of those points, particularly the annoying Doctorlove, human-centricity (why not go to some fun places, rather than following human cilivisation around everywhere?), human/Doctor worship, Time Lord angst, Russell T Davies’ obsession with his own creations (why can’t we have the far-superior Mondas Cybermen instead of the parallel universe ones?) and all-around cringeworthy awfulness of Last of the Time Lords.
So… anybody see Waters of Mars yet?
I did! It was much better than Planet of the Dead!
Whee!
It seems that the BBC have uploaded several classic Doctor Who stories to Youtube: seems that the BBC have uploaded several classic Doctor Who stories to Youtube:
The Edge of Destruction, The Krotons, Carnival of Monsters, Planet of the Spiders, The Masque of Mandragora, The Awakening, The Caves of Androzani, The Twin Dilemma.
I like this selection, because it has 2 regeneration stories, 2 Doctor-acting-scarily stories, and 2 of my favourite companions (Zoe and Jo).
Ohfreakin’sweet.
I’d been watching the ones on msn, with William Hartnell.
On MSN?!
investigates
Hey, they have Tomb of the Cybermen! I love that one!
Yay for being able to legally watch classic Doctor Who via teh interwebs!
It’s why I like logging out of my hotmail account, they throw up loads of interesting links around the site.
I’ve recently discovered the audio dramas. Judging from the 3 I’ve listened to so far, they’re pretty good.
Now if only Tom Baker would reprise his role and Big Finish’s license could be changed so they could do stories featuring Eccleston and Tennant, and things would be perfect.
“Always count your steps, Saruba Velak, you never know when you might need to escape in a box.”
Man, this new Who is brilliant. :D
(Ignoring the dodgy American accents).
Even though I should be working on my bibliography, I totally just watched Doctor Who Partners In Crime, because, well, because DONNA’S SO AWESOME.
She’s like… the pinnacle of excellence. The height of fabulousness. SHE’S JUST BRILLIANT.
“Looking! For! You!”
Which is why I’m so happeh that she’s back for the Final Speshulz this year.
I want to start watching Dr. Who, but it seems so immense. Where do you guys recommend that I begin?
I started at the 2005 series… and that seems to be where everybody else started.
Yeah, probably start with series 1 of the new version.
I still haven’t gotten around to watching the old ones…>>
Yeah, just start at ‘Rose’. Other than some nods and the occasional reprisal (Fifth Doctor, Sarah Jane, and K-9), you don’t really need to watch the old series in order to get into the new one.
Here, Dia.
I’m not sure whether that made my day or provided me with nightmare fuel for the next fourteen years.
It was just. that. epic.
If you don’t want to watch all five seasons, you could just start at the beginning of Season 2 and know that…
Or just start at the beginning of Season 3, because that’s when he gets a new companion (Firefly has forever corrupted this word for me, unfortunately) and has to re-explain everything to her.
After a few failed tries, I’m trying to get into the old series by watching City Of Death.
Thanks guys. =D
Just got through the first episode. Hmm. It’s quirky. I’ll try watching a few more.
Ooo! Ooo! Which was it? First episode of the new series (so “Rose”, where Rose meets the Ninth Doctor which is the one with the leather jacket)?
DO WANT!
I need some Doctor Who stuff. Along with some Firefly stuff.
I must admit, I have one of those and it’s currently sitting behind my old TV in the box collecting dust…
I think I might bring it back with me to uni now that I have an Actual Desk.
Yup, first one that Puppet posted.
Ahhhh…once finals are over I plan to sit down and watch a massive DW marathon with family. Revived Series One Thru Four…. :D
End of Time just aired for both the UK and America, while I’m currently watching it right now. And dear God, the Master’s so hammy this time around.
He’s gone from being kinda adorably crazy (at least in the beginning of the S3 finale, I found him somewhat endearing), to certifiably stereotypically bonkers.
I didn’t like it at all. It felt so contrived! I miss them having to explain how rich people are doing mysterious things. Now they are just saying: “Rich eccentric people are doing things that will go wrong!” No wai.
I mean, seriously? Seriously? sulks
The end of the End of Time’s in less than 12 hours. Place your bets on what might happen.
So I was listening to this radio 2 programme with David Tennant interviewing RTD a couple of days ago, and you know what they hinted at? What could happen? What David would be up for?
THAT’S RIGHT. DIFFERENT DOCTORS MEETING EACH OTHER.
OK OK OK, so I just watched part one, and my head about exploded. I mean, I heard rumors here and there about
but I sort of dismissed them, then proceeded to stick my fingers in my ears and sing very loudly everytime I came across a spoiler of any kind.
And then… and then… and then…
mind. Boggled.
Re: bets. My bets are on “Whatever you’re doing… stop”, brainy specs, “Brilliant!”, the Doctor knocking four times himself, Christopher Eccleston cameo (if Jeni’s right, then either it’s going to be Doc10 and Doc11, Doc11 and Doc9, or Doc10 and Doc9, so this one’s possible… right?), “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry”, “Destroyer of Worlds!”, weepy Doctor, cliffhanger resolved in under 5 minutes, previously unseen Time Lord powers (as in, lightning bolts and flying and whatnot), and slow motion dramatic walking coupled with a slow motion destruction with muted sound. So basically a Dramatic Walk.
Also, that lady on the TV, she’s got to be someone! I can’t see the Rani ever helping the Doctor, so Romana is possible… also, WHO IS WILF?! He’s either a human or a Time-Lord-turned-human, because the Master was affecting him, but… but… gahh! holds head and weeps
My money is on “Wilf’s revolver is a fob watch.” And “But that’s impossible…”
Put together, perhaps? :)
I’ve always wondered what a Time Lady’s chameleon circuit thingy would look like. A fob watch makes sense for a man, but a woman? I always thought maybe it was a locket or something…
AH AH AH AH AH AH AH
...
AH AH AH AH AH AH AH
Well, that Part 2 was definitely entertaining. If a bit anticlimactic and unsatisfying and nonsensical in places. But not as bad as it could have been!
Also, Swenson, I don’t think the woman can be Romana – RTD stated in a source somewhere (one of the official children’s annuals, I think) that she returned from E-Space with K9 and became the President of Gallifrey, then started the Time War through a complicated series of events involving Time Lord-Dalek peace talks and the breaking-down thereof. Although this account is a bit unlikely based on everything it contradicts (like Romana’s entire character ), it appears to be canon.
It would have been more emotional if it hadn’t have been for the massive MARTHA MICKEY WTF?
Now it’s all but guaranteed that they’ll join Torchwood.
Better not, I like MARTHA MICKEY WTF.
That was kind of unexpected. Like the Super Bar of Cameos.
I did like the Cameos, though. It was handled well. Like Rose, I was worried over that because the end of the last series was just one big feed-the-shippers Rosefest, but this was good. 2005, made me happy. And he got to say goodbye to everyone.
MARTHA MICKEY WTF.
I found a trailer for the next series.
It has (among other things):
Weeping Angels, properly-human Lady Cassandra, an exploding sonic screwdriver, an exploding telephone box, vampires in tudor dress wielding sabres, Silurian-looking aliens with Sea Devil-looking guns, something that looks kind of like a Cyberman, but obscured by sparks, many people in cloaks, the army, the Doctor with a pistol, the Doctor punching people, the Doctor attacking a grey Dalek with a hammer (and with other parts of Dalek armour in the background, which, along with the straps, colour and unlit lights, suggest to me a production facility), a creepy possible-Auton, some men standing outside a tent over which is written “Magpie Electricals”, a Dalek with a white dome and elaborate eyepiece (imperial Daleks?!) and the 11th Doctor’s probable catchphrase. And a lot of kissing, as well.
All in all, I am excited.
GERONIMO!
Awesome catchphrase.
GEROOOONIMOOOOOOO!
runs around room yelling
I like the up-down with the sunglasses.
He looks excellent.
Question: Is Doctor Who a cable show, or what? Because I’ve never even heard of it before I came here.
...and another excellent story written by Steven Moffat.
I think that, despite its parodic nature, this is actually better than some of what Russell T Davies has written.
Question: Is Doctor Who a cable show, or what? Because I’ve never even heard of it before I came here.
Ok, ok. sorry.
sobs
I have sopping-wet blanket corners now, RTD. Curse you!
But… but… OK, so fine, I admit it, the new Doctor looks fun. But… sniffle I’ve never lost a Doctor before… give me a moment, this is very traumatic. goes off to the II Asylum Crying Room to weep in private
I liked Martha/Mickey too! Didn’t think I would, but it was sweet. Jack’s scene was all :headdeskdeskdesk: for me, but it wasn’t atypical for him… liked the Slitheen that walked by in that part, too. Also, it looks like Donna did retain a bit of sense from before being mindwiped, which is a Very Good Thing. There were an awful lot of “...OK, what?” moments that would probably work out to be completely illogical if I took the time to think about it, but I can’t right now because I’m too busy crying.
I’m not sure I liked MARTHA MICKEY WTF.
I don’t know.
But I like both characters. But still MARTHA MICKEY WTF.
GERONIMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Saw Part 2 a few minutes ago. I think I’m gonna have a hard time getting used to “GERONIMOOOOOOO!!!”
Coincidence. At least that’s what Time Lord Lady said, she said something about him being at the heart of coincidence.
Or I might be making that up because of MARTHA MICKEY WTF.
Haha, I read “Martha Mickey” as “Mickey and Minnie”!
Also, @ the new trailer… huh. He seems extremely violent, and GAHHH we’re going to have more Doctor-romantic interest, aren’t we? Upsetting. I like the Doctor when he just has random friends he travels with, like Donna.
I would like a companion who isn’t from contemporary London. Where are the Byzantine warriors, alien secret agents and French princesses from the future?
Yeah, I’ve always thought it would be cool if he took someone from the past and showed them the “future” (aka, our time). Or if he started picking up random future chicks (like whats-her-face with the First Doctor, which I’ve been watching of late) and taking them “back in time” to our time.
OR BETTER YET LET’S STOP GOING TO OUR TIME ALTOGETHER, IT’S BORING. Moar other planets! Earth sucks.
And is it just me or was there a lot of spitting in both parts?
hugs Marquis I was trying so hard not to laugh. It was like….seriously…wow
Watched EoT part dos tonight….almost made up for the pathetic part one.
Awww, I just watched Love & Monsters again, and it does so make me cry. :(
Omgomgomg, they totally have to get David Tennant in to carry the Olympic Torch in a couple of years. I am convinced of this.
YES YES YES THEY MUST
OK, I HAVE IMPORTANT NEWS.
Turns out I found Jackie and Pete more moving and I’MGONNACRYNOW than the whole Rose thing in Doomsday.
Martha and Donna have totally screwed me up.
WITH THEIR AWESOMENESS.
(Yes, this post does deserve caps attack because of MARTHA and DONNA).
Turns out I found Jackie and Pete more moving and I’MGONNACRYNOW than the whole Rose thing in Doomsday.
FREAK.
WEIRD PERSON.
THING.
YEAH.
WELL. YOU KNOW.
It gets better later, maybe that’s why?
And I still don’t believe in Doctor/Rose. GAH. There’s chemistry, but just not that kind of chemistry.
Whereas with Pete and Jackie it’s… awww! I love ‘em to bits. :3
Edit: I just realised why I love Jackie so much — Love & Monsters. Goddamn, that episode was so beautiful. Showing the side that we never see — she’s been abandoned by both Rose and Mickey, left to cope on her own and that’s the only episode THAT DEALS WITH IT.
I’ve seen these episodes yet I don’t remember.
;_;
WELL, I have only just watched them recently. Before Monday I wouldn’t have been able to tell you much about them either (apart from THE ELO MR. BLUE SKY. YEAH.)
Welcome to the forums, DWest! :D
