Because its been coming up in just about every topic now. And I don’t think this one has been made yet.
gasps How can this be! It’s only the granddaddy of all fantasy stories ever!
Umm…yeah. Sauron would pwn Galby in a fight and AragornxArwen beats EdwardxBella any day.
Didn’t we already have an LotR thread?
Hasn’t it? Oh, I was sure that there was an LotR thread at some point… Opinions? I find this series to be the best fantasy I’ve read so far.
Best of its kind, at least. You know, the whole high-fantasy, deep worldbuilding sort of thing. Sets the standard for everything else. :D
Apparently we did… oops. I searched The Lord of the Rings instead of LotR, because I’m like that. Oh well, that was a long time ago and there are new members now.
/excuses
Heck, toenailxcheese pwns EdwardxBella.
I approve this thread
Lord of the Rings!
One ring to rule them all
One ring to find them
One ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them
Total. Awesomeness. Also, the movies, while there are some cringeworthy changes, ARE AWESOME.
Ash nazg durbataluk
Ash nazg gimbatul
Ash nazg thrakataluk
Ag burzim ishi krimpatul
I know I probably didn’t spell that right….but hey, I remembered!
hey, I remembered!
...I remember when I could do that.
Stop being so awesome, you’re making me look bad.
While everyone’s quoting things…
All that glitters is not gold,
Not all those who wander are lost.
The old that is strong will not wither,
Deep roots are not touched by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring.
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
Home is behind
The world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows
To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight.
Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall fade
All shall fade
I only remember that from the movie, but it was one of Bilbo’s poems.
At the risk of being called a philistine, I hated the Lord of the Rings movies. They were too long and boring.
You’re a thrice-damned philistine, Brandon, and I don’t even know what to say to you anymore.
I’m with Sansa. You are now shunned.
Shuns

...
I have no words.
What the flippin’ flyin’ monkey #$%& Brandon? I just, what?
Shun the non-believer! Shun! ShuuuuunnnnnnnnAH!
Feast on his flesh…
They were too long and boring.
But-but, there was so much eyecandy even if you were unimpressed by the whole ringquest and epic battles!
Well, maybe not so much for guys, but there was a lot for the ladies…which is perhaps not a good thing, if you think about all the Legolas squealing fangirls that used to be around.

At least Legolas, if I recall corrrectly, was not that bad a character, which is more than can be said for the current two most popular males in fiction.
Legolas is not a creeper, which is a lot to be said for him, even if he kind of looks like a girl. :D
Haha, I read this LotR spoof thing a while back in which there was this whole rivalry between Aragorn and Legolas because Aragorn kept wanting to borrow Legolas’s hair straightener. Ever since then, I can’t watch the movies without thinking of it…
@Brandon – Edward’s one, obviously, but who’s the other? Jacob? PLEASE don’t tell me you meant Eragon.
I really like the movies, but there are some flaws I find really annoying/irritating.
I love the soundtrack, which I don’t have but I listen to on Pandora from time to time.
And the books, of course, are amazing.

I demand linkage! >3<

Like what they did to Faramir! He was (well, is) my favorite character precisely because, in the book, he kept his word and let Frodo go. foams at mouth And you didn’t get to see anything of the blossoming romance between him and Eowyn in the movie except for in the extended edition (which I do own). EowynxFaramir forever!
/fangirling

Sounds like the Very Secret Diaries , Kyllorac.
I don’t think it was the VSDs… unfortunately, I really can’t remember where I saw it, it was at least four years ago that I read it. I was looking up a bunch of “what LotR character are you” quizzes in eighth grade (when I was supposed to be working on a project; I’m not quite certain why this event sticks out so much in my mind, but it does) and came across it.
LOTR spoofs are what got me through most of high school. Pity that Fellership of the Rang isn’t being updated anymore. Stopped right in the middle of Them There Two Towers. So sad.

BLASPHEMY.
Brandon – Edward’s one, obviously, but who’s the other? Jacob?
Of course I meant Jacob.
I’ve griped about the movies before.
Watching the extended version DVD commentaries really helps understand why they changed what they did, and makes me appreciate the movies much more.
So far I’ve only watched the Fellowship’s directors and cast’s commentaries, not the producers or the design team’s yet. Its takes much time.
Watching the extended version DVD commentaries
I really want to do that, but I usually end up watching the films to refresh my memory as it were, and at the end of that I can’t really face sitting through it again to watch the commentaries too. XD
The cast’s commentaries are fun because they all have great voices and accents. Christopher Lee, aka Saruman, has the best voice.
Hey Pearl….
TIG!
TAG!
TOG!
Guys, move this to the Absolutely Random thread, k?
Edit: Or the Word Ladder. xP
Actually Puppet, it is related to LotR.
But then you’d know that if you were a fan. =P
TAG!
I figured there was some kind of commentary in-joke and I was sitting here wishing I could join in. D:
Haha, I wasn’t sure…
Well, at least try to contribute something to the discussion as well.
I was disappointed that Viggo wasn’t in the commentaries.
I learned quite a bit from them. I found it really surprising how the movies are not filmed in order at all, pretty much not even close. And all that about force perspective was really interesting.
I am also really jealous that Peter Jackson kept the hobbit hole set, and plans on building it into a hill someday.
I was disappointed that Viggo wasn’t in the commentaries.
Same. He was always my favorite actor. :D
I want to see the commentaries, but everyone else overrules me. :(
Everyone else as in… who?
Because I think you should definately see them.
As in the rest of my family. I’m the only one who finds it interesting. Even my so called ‘fan’ of a brother only likes the battle scenes. He’s ten, but still…
Nobody else in my family finds it interesting either. But I watch it anyways, and they play on their computers. It works out.
And I never have time, either.
Question: Did anybody else really detest the actress who portrayed Eowyn? I thought she was really awful. She looked too old, and always seemed to be about to cry. I percieved her to be a really weak, completely annoying woman, who I wanted to slap silly nearly every time I saw her.
I had quite the opposite reaction. She looked a little older than Eowyn was, but I thought she carried the part very well.
Of course, I thought the guy playing Theoden looked absurdly young, given that Theoden is supposed to be 70. Turns out the actor was 69 at the time.
I liked Eowyn, actually. At least she spoke in normal tones of voice, unlike Arwen, who had to ‘sexily whisper’ every single piece of dialogue she had.
Liv Tyler is exactly how I imagine Arwen to be, but that just annoyed me about her.
I disagree about the ‘sexy whisper.’ I believe that in the commentaries they talk about how she dropped her voice a couple octaves. I think they mentioned how it reflected her age and depth, and that it better portrayed her heavy spirit. I thought it sounded nice, really. Her natural voice might have sounded odd, I think.
Her natural voice might have sounded odd
Which is true.
I don’t know, it just kind of bugged me, but not really that much. I still think they couldn’t have gotten a better person for the part.
always seemed to be about to cry
I thought that too in The Two Towers, but that could be intentional, so that she appears more impressive in Return of the King.
Miranda Otto is amazing. We do not speak ill of Miranda Otto.
<3
Miranda Otto is amazing. We do not speak ill of Miranda Otto.
Amen.
Miranda Otto is amazing. We do not speak ill of Miranda Otto. <3
Seconded. She was awesome. And come on, in the books Eowyn is all emotionally distraught and nutso. Wormtongue has been stalking her while her uncle becomes decrepit and stops recognizing her, then her cousin dies and brother is banished. I think weepiness might be permissible, if not a nervous breakdown.
That being said…
“I am no man!” STABNo way! Pippin is the real star. ;)
I still need to see all of them.
Pippin <3 :)
Pippin has the Scottish accent. He sings.
Automatic win.
I’d also say that Sean Bean made an excellent Boromir. He did a good job of portraying a decent man facing a corrupting power he could not overcome.
I’ll agree to that. I actually had very little sympathy for Boromir until watch Sean Bean’s portrayal. I still picture him different, but my view was changed.
Sean Bean is great in everything he does.
I also agree that Sean Bean was a great Boromir.
In early drafts, Aragorn was supposed to be a hobbit with wooden feet >.<
I think we can all feel better about crappy first drafts… even Tolkien could not escape how much they suck.
ARAGORN. Look at his hottness, look:
YOU SHOULD BE SQUEEEEING.
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
:D
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
:D
Thank goodness for rewrites… a hobbit with wooden feet… named Trotter… >.<
My favorite character in the books and movies was Faramir.
<<
>>
Hey, Faramir is pretty darn awesome.
He’s…just not Aragorn :)
Pshh, you like him for his HAWT, not for his character.
Not true! I loved Aragorn in the books. He has a very attractive personality. Although Viggo Mortenson certainly didn’t hurt ;)
Pshh, you like him for his HAWT, not for his character.
THAT IS NOT TRUE! I loved him from the very beginning, BEFORE I saw the movies. And Faramir is also wonderful (he’s my sister’s favorite character):
SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!
:D
Eh… that isn’t a good photo. Actually, there aren’t really any good photos of him as Faramir, but…
SQUEEEE!
Did anyone else get ticked off by how they made Faramir seem weak? In the book he was all “oh, there is no way I am touching that thing, so get out”. Stupid invented little side trip to Osgiliath.
Yes. That, and the way he brutalized Gollum, almost ruined the character for me. The whole point of Faramir was that he was wise and merciful; he refused the Ring and treated Frodo, Sam and Gollum with mercy when by all rights he should have imprisoned or killed them.
And what’s this crap about Frodo offering the Ring to the Nazgul?!?! </nerdrage>
As for Viggo…
WW, oh. My. God. WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT! I can’t get over the amazingness of it… SQUEEE!!
Talisman, ditto, I hate how Faramir was all evil at the beginning; so unlike the book. tsk tsk
Exactly! Faramir is not brutal. Good warrior, yes, beater-up of Gollums, no. Yes, the Nazgul ring offering was retarded. So, so retarded.
Don’t worry, we won’t tell helvengurl :P
RVL, I googled David Wenham, Australia (he was in the movie Australia). Also, he was in 300. He looked gooooood with all them muscles.
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
IT’S HIS WARRIOR FACE! RAWRRRGGGG!!
And: SQUEEEEEEEEE! WW, you are my new hero. :D
HE WAS NOT BANISHED, HE WAS IMPRISONED!!!!!!!
twitch
But there had to be a dramatic cavalry charge at the end…grrrr
HE WAS NOT BANISHED, HE WAS IMPRISONED!!!!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOO! Part of the movie replaced my knowledge of the book! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
It happens to the best of us. Which is why we have to periodically re-read the books.
[plugs ears to shout out all the squeeeeeeing]
Wow, no need to get so worked up about it, ladies. XD
Yay, at least some women here have a bit of self control. xP
Is slightly sheepish
Squeeing is contagious. At least it wasn’t over Edward :P
Hey, Puppet. You’re so good to your old grandma.
Yeah, Book!Faramir was much more awesome than Movie!Faramir.
I’ll still take both.
Just kidding on the last one. My sanity isn’t totally lost.
Just kidding on the last one. My sanity isn’t totally lost.
Yet.
Well, I’ll just have Arwen and Eowyn and Figwit then.
Just kidding on the last one. My sanity isn’t totally lost.
Hobbit!Gollum wasn’t so bad. At least he lived up to his bargain. (Although in the first draft he was supposed to attack Bilbo for cheating, or something)
Also, I was sad when the movie had no Tom Bombadil. I know, it’s a random and rather pointless sidequest that doesn’t really add anything abnd would have used up precious screen time (and thusly taken away from the Elrond!eyebrow-glare screentime), but still I wanted to see him.
He wasn’t even in any extra bits or cut scenes! :(
OH here you go Taku.
Don’t forget his hat!
Here’s his wife too
Yay, at least some women here have a bit of self control. xP
At least it wasn’t over Edward :P
Gosh Puppet, give credit where credit’s due. ;)
Why does Tom Bombadil look like he’s being played by Ian McKellen?
