Or the future, as Yahtzee keeps yammering on about.
Well, I’m not sure they could resist making a ninja protagonist, but to elaborate, the 1860’s featured a revolution against the shogunate government by imperial loyalists in which the primary method of political action was to assassinate the officials you disagreed with in the streets. In fact, the only reason I can think of that they wouldn’t use the Bakumatsu period as a setting would be because it would be way too accommodating to fit the story in, and it wouldn’t be challenging enough.
Gameplay-wise, guns were banned, so while you can leave in things like the pistol upgrade, you don’t have to trash melee combat like you would if you went to a WWI/WWII setting like they are talking about. Also, there’s lots of cool buildings to climb.
Meh, WWI or WWII would just be boring, IMO. Where’s the use of an assassin in those times? Besides, they’re far too overused. (or at least WWII is, and to be frank, how many of your average gamer out there could really tell the difference between the two, except for WWI has horses?)
I’ve heard them toss around WWI or the French Revolution as possible settings, and that they’d like the next assassin to be female.
On an unrelated note, those shifty Chinamen better ship my FF13 copy today or FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
Ooh, French Revolution. :3
Yes.
I don’t understand why anybody would ever play Halo 3.
Hahahahah.
seriously, it’s just about the dumbest game I’ve ever seen, you look like beefed up barbies jumping around… and that’s pretty much all you do, jump around hoping you’ll hit somebody, the whole game is racing around in vehicles shooting people. Everything looks so plastic. And why would people play Halo 3 now? of all times? Modern Warfare 2 stomps it into the ground.
But- but- the multiplayer!
(at least, that’s what all the deranged little Halo fanboiz always go on about. If a game can’t stand on its own in singleplayer, what kind of a game is it, that’s what I want to know? I mean, if it’s like L4D, where the point of the game is multiplayer and singleplayer is just sort of an extra present, it’s OK if singleplayer isn’t that great. But if you’re marketing the game as a singleplayer game… the singleplayer had better be awesome!)
I like Halo 3, just as I liked both Halo and Halo 2. If I were to pick something to sit in a room with a bunch of other people and play, I’d rather it be a Halo game than Call of Honor: Medal of Duty 6. If I wanted to play a FPS online, why would I play something other than TF2?
My FF13 copy just shipped though, so I doubt I’ll be playing any FPS regardless for quite some time.
why would I play something other than TF2?
I got an Eyelander today along with about 8 other items at once, but Steam is being stupid so I can’t use it.
I love Halo 2 (haven’t played Halo 3 enough) because I love playing multiplayer with my brothers and sisters.
My opinon is that videogames are more important as social group fun than anything else. Playing single player games just seems like a waste of time.
I disagree. That’s like saying it’s a waste of time to read books by yourself or see movies by yourself.
Nothing fractures friendships like Super Mario Bros. That game turned bloodlust and fury into an art. :D
Ditto with sansa. You can easily enjoy games by yourself.
Sorry, I should have phrased that much differently.
I mean that to me they are more important as group fun, and that to me personally whenever I play videogames by myself it just seems like a waste of time. I generally don’t find videogames fun unless I am playing with friends. That’s what I mean. I’m not saying that they are a waste of time.
I see your point, Pearl. I would understand why people would play Halo 3 with friends… but other then that I don’t see the appeal in it. :/
Here’s a protip to anybody interested in importing games: Do not use USPS. It is pure, undiluted shit compared to FedEx.
Grabbed some cheap plastic glasses (the 3d ones from Avatar D:), a red and blue marker, switched on nVidia 3D, and zomg is L4D2 and MW2 totally different games.
Does that really work?
I’ve got the Targe for the Demoman now and I love the shit out of it. Demo is now my second most played class… at approximately 10% of the time I’ve spent playing Sniper.
Its nowhere near the really good $200 version (which I plan to get), but it works okay. Its a bit off, but it really stands out when a lot of people are moving. i.e.: L4D.
I’m not a huge player of video games, but I really, really, really want Zelda: Spirit Tracks for DS. (Though I’m more a fan of old, 2-D Zelda…)
Ooh, same. Although I do like the art style.
Now someone wants to shoot me because I said I liked the cel-shading/animesque Zelda games.
I liked Link’s Awakening the most. The music was so pretty.
Link’s Awakening was the first game I ever owned. I need to play it again sometime.
Link’s Awakening was the last Zelda game I ever owned (and not coincidentally the last one I finished).
I feel like I need to say it again, but with more vinegar. FUCK USPS. Use FedEx or UPS to import. USPS is hurrdurr we don’t know where it is lol but we know it’s not in Hong Kong derrrrr.
Well, there will be no Final Fantasy for Sansafro this Christmas, since the worthless fucks at USPS shipped it to Lubbock and delivered it without requiring a signature, so who fucking knows where it is now.
Aww… :( That is very sad indeed. Any hope of a refund/getting it anyway?
I’ve gotta browbeat the Chinese sellers into refunding it, since USPS just has to say LOLNO whenever I ask them to do something helpful.
Been playing Assassin’s Creed II. It is so amazingly fantastic.
So I’ve heard… ;)
I got Spirt Tracks for Christmas. I got the the Goron Island. Then mom lost the cartridge. :(
Bioshock and Oblivion came in the mail last week, continuing my trend of being ~2.5 years behind the most modern games. Ah well, everything is cheap, and Bioshock is incredible.
I <3 Oblivion despite its flaws.
I’m nearing the endgame on FF13 :x Will post my thoughts when I finish it.
Am I the only one who thinks that Lego Universe looks really, really awesome?
I think it has a huge amount of potential…
Yep, but i doubt I will play it. Oh wait its microtransactions right?
Aaand it probably won’t work on Linux. :|
Prolly not.
It’s a computer game but… Urban Terror is the best FPS I could find, it’s compatible on Linux and Windows, realistic, weapons from the real world, you bleed when you get hit, etc.
And in the 4.2 release they are adding the P90 and Benelli M4. :3
/end commercial
I just beat Mass Effect 2. I don’t feel like it was better than the first one, since it didn’t feel like you could make many meaningful choices in character progression, and there were no choices at all when it came to weapon customization. It also felt a whole lot smaller in scale than the first one did for some reason.
I did like most of the new characters, though, especially Mordin and Thane.
I <3 Thane.
The only thing I didn’t like about Thane was he started macking on my female!Shepard toward the end of the game and it made me somewhat uncomfortable.
Watching the ending of MGS4. I can’t believe it took me so long to beat it. Snake ;_;
I’m getting Gioteck trigger extensions for my DualShock 3. Hopefully, they’ll make it less mind-blowingly retarded.
Ugh, I feel like a tard for trying out Modern Warfare 2 when I already have TF2.
I picked up Final Fantasy XIII and found one of the NPC’s near the beginning of the game reciting the Litany Against Fear from Dune O_o
Don’t waste your smokes, Miel. That shit is expensive once you can finally buy it.
Pokemon: Heart Gold.
That is all.

I find a lot of geek/nerd things like reciting that. I mean it’s good, but, everywhere.
How is Final Fantasy XIII? I’m put off by the linearity, the only-controlling-one-character battle system and the fact that Odin’s the new lightning summon, but is it really that bad, and are the story/music good enough to make up for it?
I’m not very far into FFXIII due to lack of time, but I don’t think it’s that bad. What Square Enix did was recognise what they’re good at: CG cutscenes and the ATB system. And they took everything out of FFXIII except those two things. If you’re not a fan of either, it’s not the game for you. But if you have a high tolerance for JRPGs, I’d say it’s pretty good.
As for plot, it’s nice that it builds off the “I’m so emo but I’m going to save the world anyways” motif and actually uses it for characterisation. How well it does this is arguable, but I found most of the characters tolerable, and with at least a little depth. I’m loving the soundtrack, but I wish they hadn’t replaced the Japanese theme song with an English one. I’m not a big fan of Leona Lewis.

I thought the new battle system was the best part. It doesn’t really start to click until late in the game, when you have a suitable amount of Optima(or whatever it’s called in the English release) combos to switch between, but once you reach that point, it’s far more intense than any other FF.
Also Fang is mai waifu
Hmmm, so it’s actually quite good. I’ll probably buy it when the price has gone down a bit.
I liked Vanille better than Hope, but I haven’t heard the English voices, so maybe they improved his. Hope’s made me want to run toward the nearest living thing and kill it. He got more tolerable by the end, but holy shit did I hate all his early scenes.
Link is broken b/c copyright issues =/
I think I’ve lost all passion for video games. They no longer appeal to me.
Is this what it’s like to lose your soul?
Nah.
I go through phases where I don’t play anything for a month or two. Busy yourself with something else until a promising title comes out or you go back to an old title for shits and giggles.
@RandomX2
Is this what it’s like to lose your soul?
Have you tried reading a book?
Woohoo! I got FF XIII, and it seems pretty good so far (although I wish it was a bit more open). This is the first game I’ve seriously played since… MGS4, I think. Not all is lost for me.
Have you tried reading a book?
FF games work just as well for that ;)
Pokemon, somehow, is just as addictive as ever. You’d think everyone would have gotten bored by now.
Fable 2 is the shit. Steampunk fantasy with swords and crossbows and blunderbusses (hell YES!) and magic!
Soul Calibre 4 is alright. I get to play Yoda as a fighter, but he’s disappointingly weak.
Huge nostalgia rush kicked in and now I’m finding myself with SoulSilver in my hands. First time playing the game since fifth grade, and it feels great to get back into it.
Mass Effect II is soooo. goood.
Playing Wipeout 3 again after a self-imposed month-long hiatus. Truly, it is an excellent game.
Rune Factory 3 is awesome. Only it’s in Japanese, so…
Well, I can read Kanji. >.> Somewhat. Enough to guess at the gist of what people are saying.
Playing Demon’s Souls right now and I wish I hadn’t decided to. Giant goblins can go eat a bag of hell.
I loved the shit out of the Jedi Knight back in the day.
You’ve got to set the realistic violence on, however you do that. The game plays better, and the saber fights are more fun when it’s basically instant death either way instead of being able to smack each other.
Some of my best gaming memories though are probably from cogging in the first JK, since that was back in the days before anti-cheating software was common. So many good stories.
Now I feel like getting those… nggh
Wow. Conker’s Bad Fur Day is stunningly unfunny.
I’m so glad that I played the ROM in my emulator, rather than paying actual money for the thing.
LittleBigPlanet is excellent. It also has Stephen Fry. :3
Might try the Heroes of Newerth beta, even though I was never a big DotA fan. Finding time to play it is going to be hella tough, though.
Catching Mewtwo is a bitch. I wasted 20 Dusk Balls to get him.
What did you use the Master Ball for?
Lugia. And yes, in hindsight, it would’ve been a better idea if I used it for something else like Raikou or Latias.
But still, at least he didn’t have Recover.
And speaking of Pokemon, this whole surge in nostalgia is actually making me wanna buy Platinum to see what I’ve been missing.
I try to avoid using the Master Ball on principle. None of the legends in Pearl were very hard to catch, although, it might be harder in HeartGold and SoulSilver given how many there are.
Just played the most bizarre round of TF2 in my life. I was on a bad team who got clobbered playing defense on Badwater. The good players on our team were getting pissed off that we had like 4 of 14 playing sniper, so when we were waiting for the round to start as the offense, we decided what we really need was MOAR SNYPARS.
So when the round started, 12 of our 14 players were all snipers with bows. Our arrows blotted out the sun and we fought in the shade. We were just no match for the guns of the white devil, though, even though we managed to cap the first two points.
It was also way, WAY too easy for spies to blend in.
And speaking of Pokemon, this whole surge in nostalgia is actually making me wanna buy Platinum to see what I’ve been missing.
And I’ve done it.
So far…
“Guess I’ll pick Piplup for my starter. (a badge later) Fuck, it doesn’t learn any decent moves!”
“The fact that Shinx doesn’t learn Thunder Wave pisses me off.”
“All of these Team Galactic grunts have awful-looking mop tops.”
“Walking… walking… So much walking… Oh hey, I suddenly got a Crobat.”
I started playing Spy the past few days. The Dead Ringer is completely out of control.
I was just about to post that, Pup ;_;
I’m DLing it right now.
Finished playing Portal. It was glorious and I will definitely buy Portal 2 as soon as it’s out.
Girls don’t play games, you sillybilly. dohoho
You’d be surprised how many girls play FPS...
