Just got New Vegas and the Penumbra pack. My backlog silently weeps.
Skyrim is 30 bucks. Should I get it? I still haven’t finished Oblivion (and I plan to) and I just got back into Fallout 3 (which I also intend to finish)... but it probably won’t drop in price again for another year or so… but if I’m not going to play it for months anyway (or if I start playing it and then forget about it for a few months, like I seem to do with every game before I go back and start playing again), is it really worth it to buy it right now?
But $30!
So, I got a “Name Tag” in TF2. What should I name my Scattergun? Right now I’m considering, “Remarkable Fruit Killer.”
Haha, I like that!
Just started playing LA Noire and it’s super fun!
...except it’s really, horribly laggy, no matter what I do. I’ve turned all the graphics settings to the lowest possible level (or, rather, I turned them to “Performance”, which I assume is “Low”), lowered the resolution, did some command line stuff people recommended on the Internet, all to no avail. :(
The game is still playable and very occasionally starts running smoothly, but it’s incredibly annoying. It’s also made me the worst driver ever, I keep running into people. I really hope my bosses never notice how many traffic citations I deserve…
Perhaps it’s too late, but I would certainly recomend Skyrim.
lol garry’s mod
I couldn’t get quite the composition or color mix I wanted, but hey, I’m still new at this.
Also I know the Scout is using Sniper SMGs, shut up. It looked better with them than with the pistols.
GMod is great. I wish I had more talent at composition and filmmaking, though.
Yeah, I still have no idea how to make any kind of movies. I’m plenty content trying to make cool still images though. Here’s two more that go together!
GMod is great. I wish I had more talent at composition and filmmaking, though.
I don’t think talent has much to do with compositional ability. You just need to play with it and find angles that look cool.
This spy is a smart spy.
But maybe not smart enough.
I kinda want to see if I can make a terrible comic with this in my not-working-on-my-novel-not-playing-cave-story-not-playing-Magic downtime.
Concerned: TF2 Edition.
Awwwww yeah.
I was kind of bored today, so I decided to download an HL2 mod I’d heard good things about, Minerva: Metastasis. It’s… really, really good, actually! It’s not the height of storytelling or character or anything, but it’s a very well-designed little game. It has pretty amazing maps (they feel surprisingly large, thanks to the use of a lot of clever mapmaking tricks) and the combat is great. The Combine AI is pretty good as is (HL2 doesn’t always show it off that well, but they’re actually pretty smart and coordinate attacks, use covering fire, attack when you’re reloading, flank you, etc.), but in this game, it’s taken up to eleven. I’m not sure if new code was actually put in or if it’s just that the maps and spawns were designed to let them be as effective as possible, but I was playing on normal and still died all the time, something that rarely happens to me in HL2 anymore.
The premise is that you’re an ex-Combine soldier dropped off on a tiny island crawling with Combine to investigate what they’re up to. What you find… may not be what you first expected. It only took me about two hours to finish, which is a good time for a fun diversion. So if you’ve got at least HL2:E1 and you feel like shooting some bad guys, check it out!

Star Wars: Old Republic on PC, on sale for $45 at EB. Get, or no get?
edit: never mind, I didn’t realise it was MMO. I don’t do MMOs.
It’s going freemium soon anyway.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is on pre-order on steam. 10% off.
ME
ME
NOT ME?
Also, I’m assuming nobody here has purchased Persona 4 Arena? Because it is awesome.
Someone get on TF2 so I can play Mann vs Machine…! D:
I have one Steam Community Beta invite, if anyone wants it.
First come, first served.
I would like that please, thank you.
I finally got around to finishing Red Dead Redemption. (About 2 years after ti was relevant). I was a bit underwhelmed by the game as a whole. I remember a while back people were ranting and raving on about how sad the ending was, but to me it just felt hollow. Right now need to do some more thinking on the exact reasons, but it felt… cheap. Mass product. Like they put a “feel bad” sticker on several parts instead of letting the story speak for itself.
I also tried Slender recently. I’m a bit disappointed there as well. It’s more fun when you have people who like being scared for the sake of being scared playing with you. Not to say it wasn’t an admirable attempt. Good horror games are hard to make and rely quite a bit of graphics freeware games just can’t give you. The game play was actually extremely well set out, though having Slenderman just standing there didn’t do much for my horror elements. You can’t fear something that you can imagine is just standing around, bored. There’s no context to fear him in. Maybe if they added in a few bodies or something to indicate that he’s a threat.
Hoping to get a better paycheck soon to get some more recent games.
I’m curious, have you watched Marble Hornets or EverymanHYBRID or anything? Personally, I feel if I tried to play Slender, I’d be gibbering in a corner in about two minutes because I’ve got the context of Marble Hornets to freak me out, but if I wasn’t familiar with… him, I doubt I’d have the same response.
I haven’t been keeping up with the latest season. A very big part of me doesn’t want to. At all.
I’ve seen Marble Hornets and think it’s an amazing webseries. I have yet to see EverymanHYBRID. I still have a hard time responding to the game itself. Which is a pity since I usually don’t care about good graphics, but here it subtracts from the experience. That combined with the fact your character moves as slow as molasses and there’s no real in game indicators that you should be worried kind of kills the experience for me. He’s to be feared just because he’s there.
Goths! Being able to train infantry 50% faster at a cheaper cost than other civilizations is awesome.
I haven’t been keeping up with the latest season. A very big part of me doesn’t want to. At all.
It became quite lame. I haven’t watched the last few dozen entries. Early on it was really good though. Slender Man is a great modern day folk legend.
Goths! Being able to train infantry 50% faster at a cheaper cost than other civilizations is awesome.
No way! Teutons! Garrisonable castle with proportionally increased attack/defence is the best. PLUS, Teutonic knights, OMG. They’re like batman meets superman.
Actually, if you have the Conquerors expansion, the best unit in the game are the Plumed Archers. Mass them together and they’re better than the British longbowman, better range, faster attack rate, etc. And they’re good at hitting moving targets and buildings, too.

I don’t see how better range is possible. Longbow men definitely have the highest range of any unit in the game. The rest of it I could see though. Personally I played the Chinese. Gotta love that early economic advantage, plus lower research costs.
I also quite enjoy playing as the Byzantines. Imperial Age costs 33% less to upgrade, their buildings gain 10% HP each age (up to 40%), monks on your team heal 50% faster, pikemen cost 25% less and cataphracts are arguably the best unit in the game. If you can survive past the early and midgame you’re pretty much unstoppable.
Unless your opponent is playing as the Japanese and destroys all of your men with the best infantry in the game.
Pfft, that’s what cavalry are for! Samurai destroy cataphracts and other unique units, but they get destroyed by paladins. :P
Pikemen are infantry too.
Eh, certain civilizations are certainly better than others. The Mayans are very, very popular in the competitive scene because of how good their eagle warriors are. Cheap, fast, high HP, high conversion resistance, high sight range and they haave bonus attack against cavalry and siege weapons.
But yeah, it’s a pretty balanced game overall. To this day Age of Empires 2 is my favorite RTS game of all time.
BLACK MESA SOURCE IS GETTING RELEASED.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS!
It’s not actually the whole game, just up to Xen, but who cares?! September 14th! It’s actually happening! For reals!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Now my brother can do half-life.
What is Black Mesa?
Meanwhile, I finished Ib today. Really cool game.
It’s a remake of Half-Life, but it’s got new voice acting, new sound effects, new music (which you can download for free already—it’s pretty good!), and they probably did some level design changes as well, although I’m not sure to what degree.
Is it a fan made thing?
Yeah. There was a release of Half-Life on the Source engine (the original one, back in 2004), but a lot of people didn’t think it lived up to the potential of what a really great remake could be with the Source engine, so that’s where the idea of the Black Mesa mod came from.
It’ll be free to everybody who has a copy of the Source 2007 SDK, which conveniently can be gotten free if you have a Steam account (or if you own any Source games). Why Valve doesn’t have an issue with them basically giving away an remade version of Half-Life for free is a little mind-boggling. (They did make them change the name from Black Mesa: Source to just Black Mesa, but that’s it.)
Because Valve’s nice. And they probably aren’t making much money off the first half-life anymore.
Hmm, that’s interesting. I may have to try it.
I never played the first Half-Life, I might check it out.
I’m so glad I came here to find this ^ ^. Thought I’d be the only one who cared about Black Mesa. I’ve only been waiting for it since they started, pretty much. I may just have to skip our homecoming stuff just to go play it.
Your move, Valve. Half-Life 3 now?
Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Bhaal! It’s probably older than your PC, so you shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever running it. BG2 is widely regarded as the best computer role playing game of all time, and it kind of set the bar and the standard for the RPGs you mentioned above.
Seconding that, BG2 is awesome. It’s basically the bar by which all other turn-based computer RPGs are judged, at least in my house.
Second suggestion would be Neverwinter Nights 2, which sort of set the standard for camera-over-shoulder RPGs and had some pretty advanced AI at the time. It’s a pretty fun game, especially once you get to the city proper.
If you enjoyed Skyrim, it is nothing compared to Morrowind (#3 in the series), at least in my opinion (and the opinions of everybody who has ever played Morrowind). Should work on your computer, unless you’re running an ancient thing from pre-2001.
I know people are all “OOOH MORROWIND”, but Oblivion is pretty fun too, at least if you install all the fanmade patches so it actually works properly (and even then you still run into the occasional floating tree in the middle of the road…). So between Morrowind and Oblivion, that gives you two more enormous games to play. :) And it’s not all that hard on a computer (or shouldn’t be, with patches installed).
Can’t go wrong with Bioware. While their games are formulaic, they’re still well written. Jade Empire is a pretty good game if you like far eastern settings. If you don’t mind the somewhat dated system, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a great game. And if you don’t mind REALLY dated graphics and controls (as in the best title in the series came out on 1985), the Ultima series is pretty amazing as well. While it’s not exactly fantasy or a American RPG, Earthbound is one of the best western RPGs ever created. Oh, and I can’t believe I was neglecting Chrono Trigger, which is also a western RPG but another good one!
I could recommend more, but I’m not sure if you prefer action RPGs or plot based ones or customization. RPGs cover a HUGE range of games and a huge range of play styles.
Jade Empire brings back memories.
Bastion by Supergiant Games is also worth a look, if you don’t mind linear stories. Lovely artwork, music, storytelling, and gameplay in one pretty package. A demo is also available for free on Chrome if you’re not sure you want to pay for the entire package.
In the update list for TF2: “The Horseless Headless Horsemann’s Headtaker now uses the Horsemann’s Horseless Headless Horsemann’s Headtaker sounds.”
Dear goodness, do I ever love the TF2 weapon names.
Black Mesa is amazing. It’s completely beautiful, it’s loads of fun, and everyone should get it right now because it’s free. You have no excuse.
Although I never finished the original Half-Life, I still noticed that there are a few changes… I think some maps have been altered and weapon placements are different. I seriously thought I’d missed the crowbar at first, so if you feel like that, don’t worry, you didn’t miss it! I’m having a blast with it (appropriate, seeing as I’m currently in the Blast Pit chapter…), which is probably more a result of the original being awesome than the mod itself.
Wrote a Post-it note to remind me to download that tomorrow!
Where can you find Black Mesa for download? I have no moneies and need a new game. As long as it doesn’t require a high-end gaming PC.
If your computer can run any of the Source games (Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2 and the episodes, Left 4 Dead, etc.), it probably can run Black Mesa. The system requirements page is here. I also checked and Black Mesa is listed here (it’s a site that’ll check your computer’s specs and tell you if it will work or not), so that could give you an idea as well.
If you try it and you get a lot of lag or something, the Source engine is pretty generous about letting you crank down the graphics settings, although it won’t look as nice. Still will probably look better than the original, though!
Yeah, I’ve been playing it a bunch with all the settings on low, and while my computer normally can’t run most new games I’ve been fine—though the game lags a bunch when there’s fire or the like around.
Swenson. You are awesome. This is indisputable.
I think the absolute best game that’s tiding me over till Half Life 3 appears (besides the Black Mesa project of course), it The Walking Dead series by Telltale Games. I used to love point-and-clicks; I played them all the way back since Maniac Mansion (Day of the Tentacle in England), Grim Fandango and Monkey Island. I’m very happy the sub-genre is making a comeback in recent years.
Now, for the Space Sim Renaissance.
Playing through RE6 mercenaries. It’s good all-around, but I still have a preference for RE5. I’m not sure if RE5 really nailed it, or if I just enjoyed it because I was good at it and haven’t acclimated to the new version.
My sister wanted RE4.
Guess who got RE4.
Guess who is playing RE4.
Me. Because she didn’t want to. Seriously.
I think she’s having more fun watching me flail and figure out the interface which doesn’t teach you how to navigate it. Ever. Good thing I bought a copy with the manual still intact. And my dad keeps backseat playing with telling me I should switch weapons right now and I need more ammo and your health is really low you should heal…
At least my sister only comments about the game itself or when I do something really stupid like run right into an open bear trap in the middle of the path (though in my defense, my thumb slipped so I wound up going straight instead of around).
Playing games is so much more fun when you have an audience. XD
Learn to knife, yo.
X-Com came out today, and I’m too broke to buy it. My brother has it, though, and keeps lording it over me. I guess I’ll just have to play some more Dark Souls.
Learn to knife, yo.

THE SPACE-SIM RENAISSANCE HAS BEGUN!

Now give me Freespace 3 and I’ll be content.
Playing games is so much more fun when you have an audience. XD
RE4 is just such a fun game to backseat, especially with all the witty dialogue.
“Perhaps you are disillusioned with overconfidence just because you killed my small-time subordinate?”
“Sadller… you’re small time!”
“Ahh, hahaha!”
Never gets old :D
I guess I’ll just have to play some more Dark Souls.
Hidden for possible spoiler:
That’s why I like Let’s Plays. It’s so entertaining to watch someone else play a game, unless you’ve beaten it before and therefore want to beat your head against a wall every time they get stuck on basic things. This is why I can’t watch Portal Let’s Plays.
Turns out that Origin coupon wasn’t unique, so I picked up Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins for free!
I’m currently playing Dishonored, the first game I’ve gotten new in the last 2 years that costs more than 10$. So far, I regret getting it on the 360 and wish I had a better conputer so I could play it on the PC and see if it’s any better. The graphics aren’t very good in any direction, but I don’t play for graphics. What I do have some objections with is the gameplay. I kind of wsh they had included a light gem so I could better judge where I can and can’t be seen by enemies instead of relying on walls, guess work and turned backs as my barriers. I also don’t like the fact you’re kind of screwed on a minimum kill playthrough if you get caught. Not because the enemies are difficult, there’s just no way to lose them. I’ll probably mention more once I get further in the game, though my gamer pride says my first play through must be a no kill playthrough on very hard, so this might take a while.
I know that feeling. I steamrolled Normal Ironman(lol squad-sight double-tap sniper in archangel suit) and started a game on Classic Ironman two days ago. Took me two tries to beat the opening mission, and since then I’ve been steady hemorrhaging men over the first month and a half of the game. I think I’ve got one living soldier with a rank above Rookie right now, and his ass is laid up in the medbay for at least another week. My save is currently on the first turn of the my first Terror Mission, and my squad is four worthless rookies. I’m almost guaranteed to fail it at this point.
God I love XCOM.
I always used to think I got high XP on Mass Effect 3 multiplayer because I played the ultimate kill-stealing class, the vanguard. (and, dare I say, most fun class ever?) After playing a bunch of adept today (which I barely have ever even played with before) and still consistently getting higher XP than everyone else, I am starting to suspect I’m just actually pretty good at ME3 multiplayer. Either that or everyone else I’m playing with is terrible.
And ME3 insanity is way too easy. The only place where I’ve seriously gotten stuck so far (I’m up to Rannoch) was Grissom Academy, and that’s not even a story mission.
/hoity-toity pretension
I downloaded the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings II, only to find out that the latest patch for CKII isn’t compatible with the current version of the mod.
On the upside, the dev team for the mod is aware of the problem and will fix the bug either with a patch or new version of the mod.
On the downside, there doesn’t seem to be any word on when said fix will be ready.
Finally finished replaying ME3. The ending feels significantly better the second time around. Also, there was some actual closure this time, thanks to the extended ending, as opposed to “lol your ship crashed and a few people lived but you really have no idea what happened to anybody else, roll credits”.
Finished Pokemon Blue. Hadn’t caught them all (125 of 151). Starting again.
Still a little upset about the Wild Mew I encountered in Safari Zone. Broke 10 of those useless Safari Balls before it ran away. I had a bunch of perfectly good Master Balls in my pocket. :( Also that lone Wild Tauros.
For anyone that’s played Skyward Sword, listen to the main theme again. Then listen to this! :D
Old news. Fans figured that out before the game was released from the trailers. ;P
I avoided all trailers and info of the game pre-release, so I’m only figuring out this stuff now >.>
I swear it made the game more enjoyable, though!
As predicted, the Space-Sim resurgence has begun on Kickstarter.
BACK TO THE HEYDAY!
Still a little upset about the Wild Mew I encountered in Safari Zone. Broke 10 of those useless Safari Balls before it ran away. I had a bunch of perfectly good Master Balls in my pocket. :( Also that lone Wild Tauros.
Cheater.
It’s not cheating. It’s winning with advantage.
MASS EFFECT 3 DID NOT GIVE ME MY ACHIEVEMENT FOR WINNING ON INSANITY EVEN THOUGH I DEFINITELY CHANGED THE DIFFICULTY ON EARTH AND NEVER CHANGED IT AFTER THAT POINT
HARGLBLARGL
Oh well. I have the achievement in my heart, even if my game claims otherwise.
Oh well. I have the achievement in my heart, even if my game claims otherwise.
And that is all that matters. For now. ;P
Did you have a save point at the end, or close to?
Try it again and see what happens.
@MegaB – Yes, I did. I think. I hope.
I did some research that said you don’t get the achievement if you take the “fourth option” of shooting/refusing the Catalyst. I did that for a laugh, but then reloaded and played it “properly”. I may have to redo the ending again to see if it’ll give it to me again. But I really don’t want to have to do that last bit with the missiles again… less hard than you might think (I maybe died once or twice?), but still awful.
EDIT: Whew. I was able to start again from just before you do the run for the beam (and got killed by Marauder Shields twice, if you can believe it… he’s surprisingly hard) and this time, both it and the Unwavering achievement (for doing all the N7 side missions on Insanity) popped.
Time to replay on something other than Insanity! And with something other than infiltrator. It’s always my go-to Insanity class, but… I really don’t like infiltrator all that much. I did in ME1, where an extreme long-range character was actually useful on random Mako planets, but less so in ME2 and ME3.
Maybe I’ll play a sentinel or something…
Finished Dishonored. I really didn’t care much about the plot until the very end. I didn’t care much about most of the characters (minus the Outsider, who was only interesting because of how mysterious he was), though the gameplay was quite fun.
I kind of preferred the “bad” ending. It fit in with the feel of the rest of the game better than the good.
Someone has an awesome avatar!
THE PURPLE TENTACLE!
@organiclead – What I’ve seen of that game makes it look really fun, like Assassin’s Creed but with magic. True? I was thinking about picking it up when/if it goes on sale… although I keep saying that about Assassin’s Creed, too.
On that topic, anybody play AC3? I want it purely because I love American history (what can I say, I’m kinda biased) and an Assassin’s Creed game that takes place in sorta more recent times sounds cool.
Dishonored is a blast. It’s Bioshock meets Assassin’s Creed. The story is kind of weak and the graphics can be pretty distracting at times with their inconsistency, but the gameplay is well done and the level design is at least somewhat non linear, which is pretty good for games these days. Also the world itself is pretty interesting if you can get around the flat characters inhabiting it.
@MegaB – It fills me with joy that people recognize that little game. :D
I loved Day of the Tentacle; I actually still have the original CD and gamebox with everything in it. It was the first point and click I really, really enjoyed though I did play a few before that. The cast of characters was amazing, plus, they depicted Edison as a beer-belly with a penchant for kites. What’s not to love?
@Swenson: I tried to play AC1 but it got so intensely boring after a while that I found myself going back to command and conquer again. It DOES look good in the trailers but don’t they always? To be perfectly honest, the only game I’m waiting to play in the immediate future is Spec Ops: The Line.
Those of you who haven’t played Overlord and have Steam need to buy it and play it now because it is my favoritest game right now.
And Rhianna Pratchett did the writing. If that’s a selling point.
Other selling points include but are not limited to adorable minions, lovely mistresses, offensively happy sheep to be slaughtered, dead elves, and hobbits to slay. Fallen heroes, too. And bloodthirsty killer unicorns. And peasant peons.
You have no idea how much I prefer 90s Lucas Arts adventure games over Sierra and how happy I am that my gaming idol and creator of Day of the Tentacle, Tim Schafer, is making a new adventure game. It’s actually what started the whole Kickstarter crazy.
On Overlord, is it much more manageable on PC than the 360? I had it on the 360 but it was kind of terrible controlwise. I loved the plot, but the controls were bad enough I had to rage quit,
The controls are not horrible. I don’t know how they stack up to the 360, but sweeping minions aside (I still haven’t quite figured out how that works exactly), they’re simple and quite well-integrated. Point and click, pretty much.
And Rhianna Pratchett did the writing. If that’s a selling point.
Oooh really? THAT is a selling point! I shall check it out, thank you Kyll!
Tim Schafer, is making a new adventure game.
Oh, I saw that, it was all over the gaming news. This guy is an utter genius. If Jeni was still around, we three could celebrate Indiana Jones, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and Monkey Island together. Alas, she seems to be AWOL.
Bought Mark of the Ninja during the Steam Thanksgiving sale since it was only $7.50, and it seriously owns. It’s pretty simple mechanically but it comes together in really clever ways.
