Well, there wasn’t a thread for this yet, so… here goes. This thread is for any discussion on videogames.

I’m a huge Valve fan, myself. Half Life 2 was amazing and Left4Dead was intensely fun while freaking you out at the same time. Portal was also pretty awesome, and I can’t wait for Portal 2 to come out so I can play with portals more! I also hope Portal 2 is longer.

Awesome, that you play M&B. I don’t currently have a computer that can run it, but if I did I’d probably be obsessed.

Valve is pretty amazing. It’s rare for a single studio to be so devoted to quality. I think Valve is one of the few companies outside of independent gaming that understands games can sometimes be art. Sadly, my other favorite company, Bioware, seems to be in a semi-state of decline.

The ones they already have easily make up for it.
And they do release new franchises occasionally, like Professor Layton, Red Steel and No More Heroes.

Also, is it worth buying a PSP for Riviera, Yggdra Union, Tales of Eternia, Breath of Fire 3, Jeanne d’Arc, Crisis Core, Dissidia, Valhalla Knights and God of War?

Yes, it's totally worth it. The PSP still trumps every other handheld out there in the graphics market and the games are not too shabby either. With the new lineup this year, I might just be getting one again too.

Yeesh, E3 was crazy as hell this year! Did anyone watch Microsoft's keynote? Project Natal looks all sorts of win and I can't wait to get my hands on it! The games were amazing too! L4D2, Crysis 2, the new Halo, CoD:MW2...it was the full works! This year will be totally outstanding with blockbuster titles left and right. It seems as if the companies are trying to kick start sales again in the economic depression.

    All's good I say!

The Fire Emblem and Phoenix Wright series are my favorites, though the latest FE entries have been kinda disappointing.

All the new games Nintendo has tried to put out, like Red Steel (which was pretty good) or Mad World, have had so-so reception. It's the consumers that are creating the suckage, not the designers.

CB’s right on the money (pun intended).

Obviously they make them to get people to buy them, most don’t care if it’s good or not! If it sells, hey, they benefit right?

  13.

    sighs

If you want good games blame intellectual property rights, or, actually, high production costs—which is the main result of those.

Console makers have it so that it is illegal to reverse engineer their hardware and software. So they can set the licensing fees and development kits at a ridiculously high price. This in turns makes it so fewer developers can enter the market. Since there are high costs with making a game, developers can take less and less risks. This is the real reason why, for the most part, developers don’t take many risks: they can’t afford to. Easier to go for the masses than a niche of consumers.

This is also why PC gaming will never die out or why developers take more risks with PC games. It is inexpensive to produce and distribute something on the PC. With a console you have to milk the franchise, so to speak.

My favorite game is Okami. It’s made of win. Close behind it is Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages.

Okami’s a great game except for one major flaw: You cannot skip cutscenes or the text of cutscenes. And the text scrolls at a snail’s pace. It’s agonizing, I can’t put up with that sort of thing no matter how good the rest of the game is. At least in other games with long unskippable cutscenes you can go make a cup of tea and wait them out – but no, if you want to get through a cutscene in Okami, you have to mash the X button very, very slowly. Last time I played it though, my sister accidentally turned the PS2 off. While I was saving. I lost 20+ hours, however I wouldn’t have minded replaying the game over again – but nothing can make me sit through the anguish of the opening cutscene again.

Does anyone have a DSi? I want to get one, but I don’t know if it’s worth it.

At the moment it doesn’t have any killer apps (not any that can’t be played on a regular DS). Personally, I wouldn’t waste my money on it unless they announced a Virtual Console on the system like the Wii’s. I would trade my DS in for a DSi in a flash if I could play Super Mario Land 2 on it – emulators just don’t do it well enough.

So if you’ve got a DS, stick with it for now. Or if you don’t, just go for the DSi then, you’ll have all the DS library and more to expect. That’s my opinion anyway.

I think Game Informer said there will be a virtual console coming, with GB/GBC/GBA games.

  21.

Has it been made official though? Nintendo didn’t mention it during E3, did they? You’d think that’d be one of their headlines, considering the popularity of their handhelds. I’m confident a VC will come out for the DSi – it’s a matter of when. Personally, I’m going to wait for the good titles to be released – all the Marios, Metroids, Zeldas, Megamen, etc…

Not to mention that in Okami, each time you get an item you have to read its description over, and over, and over again. That’s coupled with the fact that, compared to the length of the game, the number of items is too small. The best game of all time, though, is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Adam, I love Paper Mario too... the only thing I hated was being forced into all those battle scenarios with dumb little Goombas and such. But other than that, it was a very cool game. Still like Super Mario Sunshine better, though. Anyone ever played Super Mario Galaxy, or does anyone have the original Mario games for NES? I do :)
  22.
Zelda TP was a really good game, I'd say the one involving the most puzzles. The musical score was flawless, and I found myself watching the intro, going back to Ordon, or just sticking around at the file selection just for the music. So nostalgic!
  23.

TP’s my first 3D Zelda and I’m loving it so far. :)

Question: Later in the game, can you transform into a wolf at will, or do something else for a similar effect? There’s no limit to the time spent in your twilight form, is there?

You can transform into a wolf at will, with no limitations.

If you enjoy Zelda, action RPGs or video games in general, I can’t recommend Ocarina of Time enough. At the least it’ll help you to understand most of the TP/WW backstory, and the music (Saria’s Song! Song of Storms! Spirit Temple!) is some of the most memorable in any game.

  24.

With the exception of portable gaming (in which I’ve always stuck with the GB/A/DS), I’ve been a Playstation guy all my life – the Wii’s my first nintendo console. However, I have tried OoT on an emulator. It didn’t really catch my interest – but since playing TP, I’ve chalked it up to the complexity of mapping the N64’s convoluted controller onto a keyboard. When I’m done with TP I’ll probably buy the game on the VC. And in any case, I already know about the split timeline thing.

On a similar note, does anyone else here watch There Will Be Brawl? It’s a great series based on Super Smash Bros Brawl, and can be found here: http://therewillbebrawl.com/index.php

You know how Kirby has never before been anything but a cute, cuddly puff ball? He takes a level in badass here.

I also enjoy TWBB. It’s very original.

Split timelines aren’t really necessary, though. Everyone, including the current producer, seems to endorse it, but I think it’s possible to fit all of the games into one cohesive timeline.

eg, MC, OOT, MM, LTTP, LA, TP, LOZ, AOL, OOA/S, WW, PH.
I think that works. I’m not sure about 4 Swords, but I think it slots in basically anywhere after MC.

  25.

Not quite, I think it’s stated that all the games except for Link’s Adventure and the Oracles take place before the original Legend of Zelda, so a single timeline would have to be:

Minnish Cap, Orcarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess*, Four Swords, Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Legend of Zelda, Adventure of Link, Oracles.

*You put TP after LTTP, but I’ve read elsewhere that one of the dungeons of OoT (spirit temple I think) shows itself transforming into the Sacred Grove from LttP. Also, Four Swords shows how Ganon acquires the trident he uses in LTTP, so it would slot in before that.

Personally, I can see why the split timeline is preferred even by nintendo execs: It means they can make a lot more games to fill up both Zelda continuities.

Actually, if you can find/afford it, the Zelda Collector’s Edition Gamecube disc is great value (includes the Legend of Zelda (original), Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and a Wind Waker demo).

  30.

Looking on Amazon, I could in fact get that used for a mere 99p less than a 2000 Wii Points card (which is the cost of two N64 games). But that then would require a gamecube controller, which is an additional £6… Well, I might just get it. But not now. I caved in and bought the Sims 3 today. Collector’s edition! I’ve barely played it but it’s good so far, and for the extra £5 it cost me, I got a 2gig plumbob usb drive, and I’m loving it.

It’s an RPG for the computer developed by a small Polish dev team. It is amazing, and it is non-linear too. Just finished one run through yesterday, now I’m repeating to see how different I can make the story.

Durandalski, have you played Hell’s Highway? Now that was an outstanding game. It really deserves far more credit than it received!

  33.
I haven't finished HH yet, because i have to play 360 games at my cousin's house. I was enjoying the first three levels, but switched to Gears after seeing the trailers. Part of the issue was that my cousin wanted to play too, and Hell's highway doesn't have a splitscreen co-op. So we both played Gears for the first time, together. I think it's the most fun that way.
I don't like the Hell's Highway health system much, I have to play on the highest availible difficulty to make it challenging. But other than that, it was awesome.

Halo has its flaws, but it's a good game overall. Massively overhyped for sure. But most of those people don't even care about the single player, just the multiplayer.
