Well, there wasn’t a thread for this yet, so… here goes. This thread is for any discussion on videogames.
I’m a huge Valve fan, myself. Half Life 2 was amazing and Left4Dead was intensely fun while freaking you out at the same time. Portal was also pretty awesome, and I can’t wait for Portal 2 to come out so I can play with portals more! I also hope Portal 2 is longer.
I am saddened that episode 3 will be the end.
The Legend of Zelda is more awesome. Especially the GBC Zeldas.
Atlus’ Dept. Heaven series FTW.
Also, (especially GB and N64) Zeldas.
Mount&Blade is made of win; as soon as it goes multiplayer it will be epic!
Awesome, that you play M&B. I don’t currently have a computer that can run it, but if I did I’d probably be obsessed.
Valve is pretty amazing. It’s rare for a single studio to be so devoted to quality. I think Valve is one of the few companies outside of independent gaming that understands games can sometimes be art. Sadly, my other favorite company, Bioware, seems to be in a semi-state of decline.
Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders and Heroes.
I play old C64 and Genesis games, mostly, but hardly anything beats Ratchet and Clank for some mindless blasting.
Ratchet and Clank truly has some of the best weapons ever designed.
Love Ratchet and Clank. Right now I’ve mostly been playing the new UFC game.
I watched the L4D2 and AC2 trailers- they were pretty sweet!
I still need to watch the conferences… I should get on that.
Anyway, playing inFamous now. So far so good.
Nintendo is pissing me off. Do they ever release new franchises?
The ones they already have easily make up for it.
And they do release new franchises occasionally, like Professor Layton, Red Steel and No More Heroes.
Also, is it worth buying a PSP for Riviera, Yggdra Union, Tales of Eternia, Breath of Fire 3, Jeanne d’Arc, Crisis Core, Dissidia, Valhalla Knights and God of War?
Nintendo really dropped the ball since the gamecube.
I love how most of those games are preexisting franchises.
Meh, I’m sticking with computer gaming for the most part.
A friend of mine turned the settings on Crysis all the way up… I warned him not to. If you hear explosions coming from California, it was probably him.
Back to E3… I don’t own a console, so I’m purely PC… but honestly, I’m not sure I want one, anyway. I don’t play a ton of games, just casually, so I don’t really want to shell out the money… I’d rather save the money and get a better computer. PC games are awesome, anyway.
I can’t really afford mainstream games so… indie and open-source games! I actually think the game play is far superior in most indie games, because they are so focused on wasting their time with graphics.
It’s the consumers that are creating the suckage, not the designers.
lol I love this attitude.
So the onus of producing good games is on the consumers? Or the onus of making sure people can consume things is on the producer?
lmao
CB’s right on the money (pun intended).
Obviously they make them to get people to buy them, most don’t care if it’s good or not! If it sells, hey, they benefit right?
sighs
If you want good games blame intellectual property rights, or, actually, high production costs—which is the main result of those.
Console makers have it so that it is illegal to reverse engineer their hardware and software. So they can set the licensing fees and development kits at a ridiculously high price. This in turns makes it so fewer developers can enter the market. Since there are high costs with making a game, developers can take less and less risks. This is the real reason why, for the most part, developers don’t take many risks: they can’t afford to. Easier to go for the masses than a niche of consumers.
This is also why PC gaming will never die out or why developers take more risks with PC games. It is inexpensive to produce and distribute something on the PC. With a console you have to milk the franchise, so to speak.
Oh good. You just made me feel good about myself for being a PC gamer.
(We have a Wii, but it’s not like I use it for anything other than tennis).
Well PC Gaming is an art so to speak so you should feel pretty good.
I know I do!
Yeah, and there are just so many things you can do with a joypad anyway…
But wait until Nintendo comes up with the WiiBrainJack instead of the Wiimote, and it’ll be free Matrix for anyone!
(incidentally, any of you saw “existenz” by Cronemberg? I found it brilliant, and right on the spot!)
Like the WiiMote, it will not be utilized to its full potential.
Even when they do release extra peripherals to make it do what it was supposed to do from the start.
No love for the SixAxis?
The few times I tried it at a friend’s house, I felt it unwieldy and clumsy… does that answer?
Complaining about SixAxis is kind of silly, since there isn’t one game that relies on it at all.
I was joking. I actually have a PS3, and Ratchet and Clank Future uses it for a few of its minigames. It works well enough, I guess.
I was just watching the Sony E3 conference, and their new motion controller blew my mind.
Sony’s controller has potential. Microsoft’s seems really hard to program for, and it also seems like it could easily have lots of inaccuracies— far too many to be acceptable to anybody who’s playing.
Yeah, the crazy thing is that the controller Sony showed was just the prototype. And it was still that accurate in the live demo. When the guy started using the bow and arrow with it, I dropped everything I was holding. Hopefully they don’t mess that up, because it looks sweet.
True…
Man….especially when he demoed the Bow and Arrow thing, did you see him nail that Zombie in the nuts?
That was all sorts of awesome.
Is Dragon Age going to be good? I was disappointed by the demo footage I’ve seen so far, but I hope that’s just because they still have a lot of work to do. The game seems to have changed a lot since its original conception.
At the risk of sounding like a pansy, I would like to say that I immensely enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine. :D
I just played The Witcher again and now I’m addicted to it. Bad idea.
My favorite game is Okami. It’s made of win. Close behind it is Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages.
Does anyone have a DSi? I want to get one, but I don’t know if it’s worth it.
Okami! I love that one too! Actually, I’ve only played it at my friend’s house, but it’s just such a spectacular game, I’m going to need to get it for myself. Never played Oracle of Ages, but I do like LoZ games in general.
I preferred Seasons, because it’s red, and Din is attractive.
Although Link’s Awakening is probably my favourite portable Zelda for the music and emotionalness.
I liked Ages because it felt like it was more puzzle-based. And I stink at fighting in those games. XD And it was the one that I had without having to get an emulator.
I heard that Nintendo was going to do an Oracle of Secrets game, but then they cancelled it. Is that true?
My favorite game is Okami. It’s made of win. Close behind it is Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages.
Okami’s a great game except for one major flaw: You cannot skip cutscenes or the text of cutscenes. And the text scrolls at a snail’s pace. It’s agonizing, I can’t put up with that sort of thing no matter how good the rest of the game is. At least in other games with long unskippable cutscenes you can go make a cup of tea and wait them out – but no, if you want to get through a cutscene in Okami, you have to mash the X button very, very slowly. Last time I played it though, my sister accidentally turned the PS2 off. While I was saving. I lost 20+ hours, however I wouldn’t have minded replaying the game over again – but nothing can make me sit through the anguish of the opening cutscene again.
Does anyone have a DSi? I want to get one, but I don’t know if it’s worth it.
At the moment it doesn’t have any killer apps (not any that can’t be played on a regular DS). Personally, I wouldn’t waste my money on it unless they announced a Virtual Console on the system like the Wii’s. I would trade my DS in for a DSi in a flash if I could play Super Mario Land 2 on it – emulators just don’t do it well enough.
So if you’ve got a DS, stick with it for now. Or if you don’t, just go for the DSi then, you’ll have all the DS library and more to expect. That’s my opinion anyway.
I think Game Informer said there will be a virtual console coming, with GB/GBC/GBA games.
Has it been made official though? Nintendo didn’t mention it during E3, did they? You’d think that’d be one of their headlines, considering the popularity of their handhelds. I’m confident a VC will come out for the DSi – it’s a matter of when. Personally, I’m going to wait for the good titles to be released – all the Marios, Metroids, Zeldas, Megamen, etc…
Not to mention that in Okami, each time you get an item you have to read its description over, and over, and over again. That’s coupled with the fact that, compared to the length of the game, the number of items is too small. The best game of all time, though, is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
TP’s my first 3D Zelda and I’m loving it so far. :)
Question: Later in the game, can you transform into a wolf at will, or do something else for a similar effect? There’s no limit to the time spent in your twilight form, is there?
You can transform into a wolf at will, with no limitations.
If you enjoy Zelda, action RPGs or video games in general, I can’t recommend Ocarina of Time enough. At the least it’ll help you to understand most of the TP/WW backstory, and the music (Saria’s Song! Song of Storms! Spirit Temple!) is some of the most memorable in any game.
With the exception of portable gaming (in which I’ve always stuck with the GB/A/DS), I’ve been a Playstation guy all my life – the Wii’s my first nintendo console. However, I have tried OoT on an emulator. It didn’t really catch my interest – but since playing TP, I’ve chalked it up to the complexity of mapping the N64’s convoluted controller onto a keyboard. When I’m done with TP I’ll probably buy the game on the VC. And in any case, I already know about the split timeline thing.
On a similar note, does anyone else here watch There Will Be Brawl? It’s a great series based on Super Smash Bros Brawl, and can be found here: http://therewillbebrawl.com/index.php
You know how Kirby has never before been anything but a cute, cuddly puff ball? He takes a level in badass here.
I also enjoy TWBB. It’s very original.
Split timelines aren’t really necessary, though. Everyone, including the current producer, seems to endorse it, but I think it’s possible to fit all of the games into one cohesive timeline.
eg, MC, OOT, MM, LTTP, LA, TP, LOZ, AOL, OOA/S, WW, PH.
I think that works. I’m not sure about 4 Swords, but I think it slots in basically anywhere after MC.
Not quite, I think it’s stated that all the games except for Link’s Adventure and the Oracles take place before the original Legend of Zelda, so a single timeline would have to be:
Minnish Cap, Orcarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess*, Four Swords, Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Legend of Zelda, Adventure of Link, Oracles.
*You put TP after LTTP, but I’ve read elsewhere that one of the dungeons of OoT (spirit temple I think) shows itself transforming into the Sacred Grove from LttP. Also, Four Swords shows how Ganon acquires the trident he uses in LTTP, so it would slot in before that.
Personally, I can see why the split timeline is preferred even by nintendo execs: It means they can make a lot more games to fill up both Zelda continuities.
Something that hasn’t really been mentioned lately is the iPhone and iPod games genre. I don’t know about you lot, but NFS on my 3G looks just as good as the PSP version.
I wish there’d be a Wipeot but I doubt that will happen. iPhone gaming is looking pretty sweet right now!
SMRPG > Paper Mario > PM:ATYD
SMRPG never managed to spark my interest as much as its sequels. The SuperStar Saga games on the GBA/DS are some of the most hilarious I’ve ever played.
@DrAlligator
>I have tried OoT on an emulator. It didn’t really catch my interest – but since playing TP, I’ve chalked it up to the complexity of mapping the N64’s convoluted controller onto a keyboard.
Get a gamepad. You will love it.
My video gaming experience is quite limited. I play the Legend of Zelda series, and that’s about it. =D I have Super Mario Galaxy, which is pretty good, then just the party games like Rock Band and stuff.
Get a gamepad. You will love it.
OoT has that same horribly slow text during cutscenes as Okami if I recall. Anyway I already plan to buy it on the Virtual Console when I’m done with Twilight Princess.
Actually, if you can find/afford it, the Zelda Collector’s Edition Gamecube disc is great value (includes the Legend of Zelda (original), Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and a Wind Waker demo).
Looking on Amazon, I could in fact get that used for a mere 99p less than a 2000 Wii Points card (which is the cost of two N64 games). But that then would require a gamecube controller, which is an additional £6… Well, I might just get it. But not now. I caved in and bought the Sims 3 today. Collector’s edition! I’ve barely played it but it’s good so far, and for the extra £5 it cost me, I got a 2gig plumbob usb drive, and I’m loving it.
THE SUPERSTAR SAGA ARE NOT SEQUELS.
BTW The Witcher is now my favorite RPG. It is BOSS.
I know, but they follow the similar mechanics and style. If anything, they’re sequels in spirit.
What’s the Witcher like? I’ve heard of it but know little-to-naught about it.
They most certainly do not feel the same way. It’s like calling paper mario a spiritual sequel. It’s just a pipedream, but it would be cool if they made a real sequel.
It’s an RPG for the computer developed by a small Polish dev team. It is amazing, and it is non-linear too. Just finished one run through yesterday, now I’m repeating to see how different I can make the story.
I think that the main problem with Halo’s storyline is that all humans apart from Master Chief are comically incompetent.
Durandalski, have you played Hell’s Highway? Now that was an outstanding game. It really deserves far more credit than it received!
This is the case in most games where you play a seasoned, exceptional soldier.
What about a seasoned, exceptional theoretical physicist?
LOL, Gordon Freeman.
Still refers to a seasoned, exceptional soldier swenson!
Since when is he a soldier? Although true, he is surprisingly handy with a crossbow for your average scientist.
What about John Freeman?
Guh, Frohman all the way.
Who’s John Freeman? Gordon Freeman is the freelance warrior, alien-declared ‘Free Man’ and a scientist to boot.
You can’t beat him, right swenson? ;D
John Freeman is Gordon Freeman’s brother who was one day an office.
He got an email from his brother that said that aliens and monsters were attacking his place and axed him for help.
John Freeman got his computer shut down and went on the platform to the top of the building where he kept his motorcycle.
The plants were singing and the birds and the sun were almost down from the top of the sky.
...not the next line, no, but it’s one of the best in the series.
zombie goasts leave this place!
“It is a good day to do what has to be done by me to help my brother to defeat the enemys!”
and
“It is time for me to live up to my family name and face full life consequences!“
