People seem more or less settled down now, so I think it’s a good time to start putting in place some structure. That way we don’t run into problems in the future. I’ll also be busy later in the summer, so it’d be good if I got some help watching out for trouble.

So, if you’d like to nominate someone for moderatorship, that’d be very helpful. It’s better for moderators to be picked by the community rather than just by the moderators. That way you guys pick someone you feel you would respect, and hopefully do respect that person when it comes to enforcing rules. :)

  1.
    I nominate Nate Winchester.
  2.

Kitty (if she ever shows up <.<), Snow White Queen, and Rand.

We can only nominate three, right?

I think Kitty, Lord Snow and SSD would be the best, since they already have some kinds of experience.
  4.

I would nominate Grignr the Ecordian, but he doesn’t have an account.

  5.
    I nominate Complete Bastard.

I think I’ll just go ahead and remind people that the traits of a good moderator are: responsibility, thoughtfulness, and objectivity.

Oh...well, in that case, I nominate Complete Bastard.
  8.

Being objective means being loathed, being thoughtful means always trying to look for the truth behind the words, and being responsible means being impartial. Only a bastard can do these things, but people don’t like bastards.

Yeah… but you see, in the old forums a lot of the moderation effort went into making sure Rand didn’t get into trouble, is the thing. You need the moderators to be internet veterans.

  13.
Well, you can do all those things politely, can't you? I think the majority of people just need a push in the right direction, not a ginormous shove. *Most* of us seem to be courteous and willing to listen.

According to the original Latin meaning of the word, that would mean that moderators should be the eldest or the ones who have been online longer... What say you?

How many moderators will we be having anyway?

There doesn’t need to be any limit on the number we have, really. And yes, I’m inclined towards the older and more experienced users. Not that you younger people wouldn’t be great moderators given time, but I do think we should give you that time to learn.

  15.
(By the way, what does the 'sticky' next to the name of this topic mean?)
  16.
Older and more experienced doesn't mean they should be put in any position of authority, take Jeni for example

Uh, yeah... things got a little intense in the other forums. I did a lot of things wrong. So, I understand what you mean.

I nominate Snow White Queen because she's not going to abuse her power and because she's on this site a lot. And she's nice to everyone and is endlessly creative.

I nominate OverLord Dan because he spends a lot of time here anyway and is very objective.

I can be a good, just not kind or whimsy. I stand for truth and reason, not making people feel good and secure about things. I don’t rule with favoritism or other nepotist concerns, and in my opinion every member is the same by rights, even the unpopular ones or new ones. If biting words are needed to open some eyes I don’t mind biting words. Decorum is a false impression of what we really think and feel inside. I think that just disarms people from seeking the truth. They see someone say soft and gentle words and assume they have experienced life and have maturity, but that is just another illusion people hide behind. The real truth is in the reasons, not the voice, not the face, not the kindness.

This is why I am a bastard by title, you see, people like me are seen as cruel and vicious for being honest and critical. I don’t like hiding shit behind a sophisticated facade. If I disagree I disagree openly, and that disturbs people who want peace and tranquility.

Might as well play my role as bastard since I have a vitriolic sense of humor too.

  17.

Perhaps I was being too general. Provoking a reaction isn’t necessarily the same thing as saying something significant. I can certainly provoke a reaction by throwing a couple of key words such as “abortion”, “homosexuality”, “George W. Bush” and “Obama” into an internet forum, but don’t have to say anything significant about them.

    There we go.

And let’s not derail this thread.

These are the questions we came up with.

    • How many full rewrites have you done?
    • How do you research information when writing?
    • Are there times when you have to take charge of your work as an author, and reject an editor’s suggestion? What suggestions have you ignored?
    • What advice to you offer young writers?
    • What do you think is the greatest selling point of your series?
    • What is your least favorite aspect of writing?
    • What advice can you give to an aspiring writer on the process of editing his/her manuscript and submitting it to an agent or publisher? What tips do you have for getting one’s manuscript recognized among a pile of slush among thousands of other manuscripts sitting on an editors desk?
    • Do you have anything to say to your critics? (Elaborate if necessary on criticisms)
    • Why have you avoided writing from Murtagh’s point of view?
    • How much do you write in a day?
    • What techniques do you use to improve, develop, and evolve your writing skills?
    • What’s the best book ever written?
