Okay, everybody, we’re going to play a little game. I saw this done before on Anti-Shurtugal before it renovated. but I’m going to do it a little differently. Basically, I’m going to go over a plot for a story (in a block quote for better visibility), and I’ll wait for some of you to guess in the comments what story it is before editing this post to reveal the answer. I’m mostly doing this because I recently noticed something, and thought I’d try to point it out. So without further ado, let’s get this show on the road!

There’s a new kid in school, and while settling in doesn’t take too much in the way of effort, there is one classmate who is acting…strangely. Said student gets uncomfortable when around New Kid, tries to keep some distance from NK, tells NK to stay away and even runs away a few times when NK approaches or tries to talk.
New Kid is concerned about this, and after a few misunderstandings and wild guesses (and some research on New Kid’s part) the truth comes out; the other student is a vampire! But unlike the traditional vampire, this bloodsucker doesn’t seem to need to drink human blood, and can walk in the sunlight without burning.
However, some special quality of New Kid causes an instinctive reaction in Vampire, which is why Vampire had been running away from NK in the beginning of the story. They manage to find ways around this, and from here, a strange kind of relationship forms (though this does not stop the suggestions that NK should stay away). New Kid even gets to meet Vampire’s family, who are mostly accepting of the two being together, with some exceptions.
But then some evil vampires show up! Near the end of the story, they kidnap one of the two through deception, but fortunately said character is rescued by the other character with some help from the home team family of vampires, leading to the (mostly) happy ending.

Okay, hopefully I haven’t made that too vague… So what story do you think I’m telling the plot of? I’ll edit this sometime in the next couple of days with the answer and possibly a list of guesses from the comments.

EDIT: Okay, so here’s the list of guesses, as promised:

    Twilight (Adam)
    Red Dawn (OverlordDan)
Something by Shakespeare (guessed by Snow White Queen, but Steph mentioned Macbeth specifically)
The fourteenth book of A Series of Unfortunate Events (Steph)
    Pride and Prejudice (Steph again)
    Anita Blake (Moldorm)
    Vampire Knight (Moldorm)
    Helsing (OverlordDan)
    Karin (Dan Locke)
George of the Jungle (Okay, now it’s just getting silly, Steph :))

So what was it really? Well, Dan Locke got it right (on his first guess, no less)! Congratulations, Dan!

Karin (titled Chibi Vampire in the US version of the manga, for some reason…) is a romantic comedy about Karin Maaka, an…unusual vampire (more on this in a moment), and Kenta Usui, her classmate/acquaintance/friend/boyfriend. So to be fair, let’s go over the plot of the series again, and I’ll fill in the necessary information.

There’s a new kid in school, Kenta Usui, and while settling in doesn’t take too much in the way of effort, there is one classmate, Karin Maaka, who is acting…strangely. Said student She gets uncomfortable when around New Kid Kenta, tries to keep some distance from NK him, tells NK him to stay away and even runs away a few times when NK he approaches or tries to talk to her.
New Kid Kenta is concerned about this, and after a few misunderstandings and wild guesses (and some research on New Kid’s his part) the truth comes out; the other student Karin is a vampire! But unlike the traditional vampire, this bloodsucker doesn’t seem to need to drink human blood, instead needing to inject her blood into her victims before it causes horrible nosebleeds, and can walk in the sunlight without burning. She also lacks any other known vampire weaknesses and strengths, which is part of the reason why Kenta didn’t figure it out sooner.
However, some special quality of New Kid Kenta’s unhappiness/misfortune causes an instinctive reaction in Vampire Karin, which is why Vampire she had been running away from NK him in the beginning of the story. They manage to find ways around this, and from here, a strange kind of relationship forms (though this does not stop the suggestions that NK Kenta should stay away - about three or so meters away for safety’s sake, to be exact – as there’s still the occasional incident). New Kid Kenta even gets to meet Vampire’s Karin’s family (when her father kidnaps him), who are mostly accepting of the two being together, with some exceptions. Karin’s father, in particular, is very protective of his daughter, and worries about what Kenta will do to her when they’re alone.
But then some evil vampires show up! Near the end of the story, they kidnap one of the two Karin through deception, but fortunately said character she is rescued by the other character Kenta with some help from the home team family of vampires Maakas/Markers, leading to the (mostly) happy ending which I’m not spoiling unless I get the okay from everybody.

And you guys probably figured it out by now, but I was comparing the plot to Twilight (OF COURSE!). It was hard to keep from giving away that it wasn’t when the main character and love interest are switched! And yet (in my opinion, of course) it’s done better.

Dan Locke linked to the TVTropes page, but here it is again.

And for those of you curious about the manga, there are translated scans here. They’re not quiiiite the same as the official translations in the bookstores, though, and some pages are missing, so I’d recommend the bookstore in the long term.

Well, my obvious guess is Twilight. But what are you trying to point out? (Unless…it’s a different book! That would be pretty amusing, but I doubt that’s the case.)

  2.

Ooo! Ooo! Is it Red Dawn? :P

    I don’t really understand. DDD:

  3.

Um. I really have no idea.

  4.
    Ooh, ooh, I know this!

I KNOW it's something by Shakespeare, I just know it!
  5.

I KNOW it’s something by Shakespeare, I just know it!

I didn’t know Shakespeare did vampire stories! Why didn’t they ever use one of those in classes?

  6.

Yeah. Macbeth was a vampire story originally. What happened was, he killed Duncan, Banquo, etc in a bloodthirsty rage. They had to change it cause it freaked the audiences out too much.

But Macbeth was never the new kid, so…

It’s not the 14th book of a series of unfortunate events, is it?

  7.

    Noooooooope! :)

But there are 14 books involved.

  8.

I’m not including The Beatrice Letters.

Um… Aw, gee. It’s not Pride and Prejudice, is it?

It's not another contemporary novel series, like Anita Blake or something similar, is it?
Or an anime, like Vampire Knight? I haven't seen it, but I know that involves vampires and schools.
  9.

manga, actually. I’ve read Vampire Knight #1. It’s nothing like Twilight this unknown plot summary

  10.

    Or an anime anime/manga,

    whistles innocently

  11.

    Umm…Helsing? I got nothin’.

  12.

    OH, I KNOW THIS ONE!!!

All of those sleepless nights spent reading the TV Tropes wiki have FINALLY paid off!

    It’s…

    (drumroll)

    KARIN!!!!!

  13.
    That actually looks really interesting...

Is it "George of the Jungle?"

I...I... I really thought it was Twilight. Ok, I don't know. I will periodically return to this thread, looking for answers. That's all.
  19.

I think that was the game, show series with all the same points, but did it “better” (I’ve never read Karrin).

Great Idea, but we need another question to keep this up. (and conformation if this was the right answer)

  20.
Drunk Fox said it was. As the creator of this thread, I suppose she has the most authority.
  21.

    Huh. Missed that update :D

  22.
Scroll all the way back to the initial post and you'll see.
  23.

Ha! The edit button foils me again! :D

  24.

Rand: That was the idea. I was trying to highlight the similarities between the two, among other things.

OverlordDan: Only better in my opinion; if one of you reads the series at some point and happens to disagree, that’s fine as far as I’m concerned. But yeah, that was pretty much the point.

And…we could probably do another somehow, if I can come up with another two books/series/whatever to compare. Wouldn’t mind help with that, if anybody wants to whisper suggestions and such.

  25.

Oh! I didn’t mean it like that, sorry! I’ve never read either (althought it seems everyone I interact with has, and luurved it), so I can’t make any informed guesses. Sorry for any mistakes :D

  26.

XD It’s okay, OverlordDan. I just worried you thought I was trying to push my opinion on everybody. Now I know you don’t, so all’s well (if it was ever unwell in the first place…).

  27.
Well, I'm coming out in spots, so... I think it's contagious.

As long as it isn’t swine flu.

  28.
Congrats! 1st swine flu joke for the forums!

They had a couple of cases in Western Australia the other day. It's been making its way over from over East.
  29.
*sigh* I'm so tired of swine flu.

I'm wondering, should we start a new game here?
  30.

I’m hoping that will be the last swine flu joke, too.

I think we should start another game, too. How about I Spy?

  31.
    Nah. Boring.
  32.

I won’t remark on that. How about Monopoly? Bags the car.

  33.

    I get the puppy!

  34.

Oh, and I’m banker, by the way.

  35.

So there’s a poor farmboy living on the edge of the Evil Empire…

    Why am I even bothering?

  36.

Alright, If were playing monopoly, I want to be the thimble. Wearing the top hat. :D

    Can I be the shoe?

  37.

Sorry, Dan Locke, we’re ignoring you, although that was funny.

Moldorm, I suppose you can be the shoe.

Anyone else joining in? I bet we could play monopoly through a thread. As long as we each had a monopoly board at home, and we marked out everyone else’s plays on it.

I call the horse. We’ll have to keep track of our money and our spot, though, like:

    $500 – 1
    $100 – 3
    (etc.)

    Owns:
    Kentucky Avenue – 2 houses
    Park Place – 1 hotel
    B&O Railroad
    (etc.)

    On: Free Parking

  38.

Yeah, exactly! It’s what I was imagining, but I was too lazy to write it down. I think a separate person would have to be the bank, though. That way, no cheating (though it’s hard to do when you have it all written down).

wait… how will we roll dice? it’s got to be cheat-proof.

Ohhh… yeah. That. Didn’t think of that. Maybe the banker rolls for us? But then we’d have to trust him/her… wait, it’s you. ARE YOU TRUSTWORTHY? looks at Steph sternly

  39.

    innocently Yep.

Wait. I think I have it. As long as we don’t have eleven people playing, we can do this:

    roll
    2- horse
    3- puppy
    4- car
    5-shoe
    6-thimble
    7-horse
    8-puppy
    9-car
    10-shoe
    11-thimble
    12-horse
    2-puppy
    3-car
    4-shoe

etc etc. Leave nothing to chance. And the order they go in- well first bagsed = first go.

Should we have traditional pieces, or some random ones as well?

And we’ll have to post a picture of the board, just to help.

OK, so we’ll already know in advance what our roll will be… I guess that could work. If we get random pieces, then I get to be this:

    I’m the Amiga boing ball.

  41.

I’m the banker, which by this stage I think just means making sure everything runs smoothly.

Head over to the monopoly-set-up thread to bags a normal piece, and then you can replace it with a custom piece!
