And I quote: “I… I do not remember your love, Ellesime. I have tried. I have tried to recreate it, to spark it anew in my memory, but it is gone… a hollow, dead thing. For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. And then nothing. The Seldarine took that from me, too. I look upon you and feel nothing. I remember nothing but you turning your back on me, along with all the others. Once my thirst for power was everything. And now I hunger only for revenge. And I… WILL... HAVE IT!!”

  1.

    And I Quote:

“With cities, it is as with dreams: everything imaginable can be dreamed, but even the most unexpected dream is a rebus that conceals a desire or, its reverse, a fear. Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.” — Italo Calvino, as translated by William Weaver.

Mr Calvino’s surrealism offers a much more sedate alternative to the angry terror and confusion offered by others.

And I quote: “To be original, you must be aware of what has come before.”

Not an exact quote, unfortunately, but in my creative writing class, we had a visiting poet last week (Ilya Kaminsky, if you’ve ever heard of him), and this is one of the things he said that really struck me. I feel like it’s a really good point. If you know what else is out there, what other brilliant ideas other people have come up with, you’re going to be so much more creative because you have so much more to draw from.

Mr. Hilton has been found guilty of killing a state’s witness who testified in this very courtroom. He did so in cold blood, and for pay. Unless the pre-sentence report indicates that he is in fact the Messiah come again, he will very likely be sentenced to life, no parole, by a Baltimore judge who for once in his life gets to leave his office feeling that his job actually matters. Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?

    They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.

there was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
that the colt from old Regret had got away,
and had joined the wild bush horses – he was worth a thousand pound,
so all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
all the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
had mustered at the homestead overnight,
for the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
and the stock-horse snuffs the battle with delight.

“Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up”

    CS LEWIS

    THE MAN

I find it hugely entertaining to compare the Inklings’ styles now that I am familiar with all three. Chesterton has a brilliant, witty, and thick style that requires a lot of the reader but rewards amply. Tolkien just sounds like the literature professor he was. Erudite, thoughtful, and slow. Lewis, though, is a nice break from the other two; he has a disarmingly simple and friendly way with words, you know?

I always loved Lewis’ dedication in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe:

    My Dear Lucy,

I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand, a word you say, but I shall still be
    your affectionate Godfather,

    C.S. Lewis

    Emphasis mine, of course.
