Affections for Johnny Cash, AC/DC, and sea shanties (who is the performer?) are not mutually exclusive. Most people listen to lots of kinds of music. The idea that people who like genre X won't like genre Y is absurd.

Yeah, but it seems a lot of people I talk to tend to be a big fan of one particular genre of music. I don’t, I sort of like everything so long as it’s got something interesting going on with the instruments/voice.

I mean everyone likes Johnny Cash.

    Haha, true enough.

I don’t know anyone that only listens to one thing… that’s why I hate when people ask a question like “WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?” Seems like it happens to me every fuckin’ day. Or the variation “WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU PLAY????”

Yeah, that question always annoys me too. Or, “what’s your favorite band?” Especially considering that if there’s a single type of music I listen to the most of, it’s various soundtracks from games/movies. It’s just not the right question.

    Or, “what’s your favorite band?”

    Well that’s an easy one…

  2.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?”

...guilty of that one. It’s a way to start conversation, okay?

  3.

    Or, “what’s your favorite band?”

That one I can answer, though it’s really, really close. I’d have to say Queen is my favourite, followed closely (very very very closely) by The Who. Though honestly, those two flip-flop, depending on what I’ve been listening to lately. Tonight was a Queen night. (six hours straight at work).

What am I listening to now?

    shifty eyes

Oh, what the hell I have no shame.

...guilty of that one. It’s a way to start conversation, okay?

What kind of answer do you expect, exactly?

  4.

Well, I don’t expect anything, really. I see if there’s something there that I can run with. Usually there isn’t, but I always like to ask people about their interests in general- books, TV, etc. When you have a mutual interest, it’s so much easier to talk to people.

  5.
For example, Nossus, if someone says they like Johnny Cash, that's tricky, because everyone loves Johnny Cash and Johnny Cash has played in several different genres.

On the other hand, if someone says they like the Skatalites, this tells you something very specific about them and you can presume they have knowledge/interest of/in other bands of that ilk, which constitutes a (reasonably) well-defined cultural sphere.

I usually don't ask those questions because I presume the other person dislikes or is bored by the music I like. This is not out of pretension but from decades of patient experience. The "is bored" reaction tends to be more common than outright hatred.

Sometimes at work they ask what music I'd like to have on the radio and I usually shrug. I've listened to all sorts of things at different jobs I've had, from Willow's bubblegum pop music, to heavy metal (can't be more specific beyond that, sorry), to soul, to jazz, to classic rock (very popular, probably the most common, but not usually very punk) to Baroque violin and piano concertos or chamber music. Most of the time it doesn't bother me as long as the volume is turned down low enough that I can ignore it. Sometimes I learn about really good bands/musicians/composers I've never heard of before this way. It's not that I don't have my preferences, but it's not worth fighting about. I can't die on every mountain.

Out of all of the K-pop groups I listen to, T-ara is definitely one of my favorites. A lot of people “boycotted” them after their giant scandal, but to me they still stand out as one of the better groups in terms of effort and overall musical quality.
