moment — latest album by Kokia.

There isn’t anything Kokia’s put out that I don’t like, but moment seems like a throwback to her old J-pop days, and I have mixed feelings about it. It’s definitely not as powerful an album as her previous few were. A sign that she’s losing steam? I hope not, but even despite Kokia’s amazing output, I guess everyone hits a creative block sometimes.

Opeth and Katatonia are touring together (squee) but since their San Diego show is at House of Blues and I’m under eighteen (by 5 measly months) I have to go with a parent/guardian. Normally I wouldn’t complain because my mom is my concert buddy, but my sister is going with a group of her friends. So it’ll be my sister, a group of late teenagers-early twenty-somethings, my mom, and then me. I LOVE Opeth but this situation already kind of sucks for me.

Would you listen to a shoegazey cover of this song...

  10.

@SWQ: Mmh… has it been a recurring downside when going to concerts, or what?

  11.

Not really…usually it’s just me, my mom, and my sister so it’s not awkward. But if me and my mom are tagging along with my sister and her friends, then it’s a bit weird.

Before I go farther, let me break down the two main musical outlets I have right now (because I’ll refer to them in future posts)...

1 – Atomic Lotus – an experimental pop band influenced by the Beach Boys, Throbbing Gristle, Frank Zappa, Sonic Youth, and Townes Van Zandt. This is the one doing the cover of “Blue Skies”. This group has five set members, and we all contribute to songwriting. Our goal is to marry absolute abrasion with absolute melody, and for our songs to sweep through all the places in between the two points.

2 – Tony Coca Cola and the Radioactive Teenagers – my solo project, involving a revolving door collective of various musicians and types of instruments, all dedicated to trashy, dumb, punk blurts (all delivered in the shortest time possible). Influenced by the Ramones, the Dickies, Minor Threat, the Monkees, the Wombles, the Banana Splits, and T. Rex.

Now that I have that out of the way, my musical problem.

Somehow, a local church got wind of my solo project, and they saw that we have a covers “My Generation”, “The Monkees Theme”, and they saw we have songs called “Gimme Candy”, “Luv is my Only Drug”, and “I Got the Blooz ‘Cuz the Doktor Stole My Baby”, and based on that they think we’re some wholesome, 60’s throwback act of good, young kids. They asked some guy that only played with me once, and because that guy is a troll and the church thought he was a member of the band (even though I’m the only constant member), he told them we could perform. What the church doesn’t know is that our cover of “My Generation” has me changing the lyrics so that there is one line where I just scream “fuck” over and over, and instead of a bass solo, our bassist usually just throws his bass across the stage and screams obscenities, they don’t know “Gimme Candy” is a not-so-subtle ode to drugs and oral sex, and they don’t know our act consists of nudity, moshing, cursing, and that I usually drop a tab of acid before going onstage.

    Yeeeaahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Should I look like an ass and cancel at the last moment? Swallow my artistic integrity and my sense of fun and put on a boring, “tame” show for their sake? Or shout “trolololololo” at the top of my lungs and go in full tilt?

  12.

Frankly, this made me laugh, especially the ‘trololol’ bit. Not to offend your delicate sensibilities or anything.

Personally, I would inform the person in charge (tactfully if possible) that while you’re honored that they want you to play, it’s possible that they have been misled as to the content of your music and stage show and as such, you are not quite sure that it is appropriate for the occasion.

Sufjan Stevens’ For the Widows in Paradise… cover by Seth Brown

  13.

I’m debating getting an Emilie Autumn album from Amazon. I think her music is really interesting. It has a weird intense/disturbing quality to it as well (most of the stuff I listened to was from Opheliac). I can’t decide if I like it enough to spend money, though. I’m not even sure if I like it exactly. It’s quite different.

Well… this might as well become a guilty pleasure… though it saddens me that it’s actually something found in a legendary band.

Anyway, Darth Vader and company are amazing dancers! XP

Everyone needs to listen to this song^^.

Seriously, the beat is killer, the guy has a good flow, good voice, and he wants to “stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn esophagus”.

    What’s not to love?

  16.

@ NP: I personally like Emilie Autumn a lot, although I’m not sure how much of that has to actually do with her music or her own personality and charisma as a performer. Have you checked out her instrumental material? I like ‘Unlaced’ and ‘Leech Jar’. The remixes of her songs ‘Liar’ and ‘Dead is the New Alive’ are also good.

@ SWQ Liking Emilie for her personality? From what I’ve heard, her personality sucks. She seems like an over privileged, 14-year old emo girl stuck in a grown woman’s body.

Liking Emilie for her personality? From what I’ve heard, her personality sucks. She seems like an over privileged, 14-year old emo girl stuck in a grown woman’s body.

Of course, I’ve never met her personally, but I always thought that her quotes and comments were entertaining and from a different perspective than what I might have expected. I don’t think she’s ‘emo’ in the stereotypical, pop-culture sense at all- she has a definite aura of sarcasm about her person.

Then again, everyone has their own opinions, so I won’t say anything further than that.

Well, I referred to her as emo in the sense of how many emo teenagers are. She seems completely self-centered, pretentious, attention-whoring, and has a rather over-inflated opinion of herself. Also, she refers to herself as “asexual” when it is quite clear, judging by interviews, she has no idea what asexual means, and misidentifying and being confused about your own sexuality is a hallmark of being an angsty teenager.

Don’t mean to start a fight, just explaining myself.

Hey Maese, and anyone else who likes metal on this board, check out this black metal band from my area…

    http://www.stereokiller.com/ArdennesBlackMetal

I’m friends with three out of four of the members (the bassist, the guitarist, and the vocalist), I’ve never really met the drummer, but I think he hates me.

Listen to “Summoning the Nether Lich”, I think that’s been their best effort yet.

  21.

They’re not bad, but I’ve never been able to get into black metal…it’s just so cartoonish in its attempt to be EEEEEVIL that I can’t take it seriously at all. (Yes, I know that much of metal is ridiculous, but I try to stick on the less-ridiculous end).

I’ve been kind of bingeing on doujin music. I have a pile of doujin albums on my desktop and I’ve been going through them one by one… there’s a few that I like and a few that I don’t, but a nice change to be able to do this with music, since I’m usually so selective about what I listen to.

Asriel seems to be a popular circle, but I haven’t liked what I’ve heard of them so far. I think it’s their vocalist… her voice is just too tinny for me.

I liked ignis, a single by Annabel. A bit eerie, and the use of synth effects wasn’t too bad. She’s a pretty new artist, but I’m looking forwards to more from her.

I also liked Asterium by Uekiya: it’s a melodic pop/rock sound, and a bit of metal. Fun music to study to.

Wakusei Kouro seems to be a collaboration between two artists I’ve never heard of; it had a cute cover :P The songs are based on the planets of the solar system and accordingly vary in style, but there are a few good ones in there.

There’s also Shoujo Byou, whose don’t stand out too much except for their album Lorelei. “rectitude” especially was an excellent song. I wish I had the kanji for it so I could do a full translation.
