I’ve heard a bit about various paintings people here are doing, or going to do. So I thought, here is a place to put up pics of our work, for critique (or not).
Or simply for discussion about technique, etc.
On that topic, I did a self-portrait today, and it’s the best I’ve ever done! I’ll try to scan it on here, but first I have to get it from the jaws of death… AKA my art teacher’s grasp…
I mostly do pixel art. Here are a few of my better ones:
Here’s a sketch I did when I was bored in math class. I think you can even see the characters on the front of the worksheet. XD
Does this count as art?
Oh I get it. I see the man strangling the child. Clever design that.
Or like it thought that there wasn’t a window there and…
Sly, YES!! Totally. Très cool. I’m still trying to get my self-portrait from the jaws of death…
I like it. Maybe not as the primary logo for the site, but it’d be cool on a sweatshirt.
For the primary logo I’m going back to the old skool plain logo. But what’s above will be a t-shirt.
The direction I was going with the redesign is being changed again. I suck… but getting a classy look down is kind of hard. :/
I think it looks pretty cool. D:
Thank you. :-)
My actual art is pretty terrible.
I like it, personally.
And I really like the detail on the bird’s wing.
That looks pretty sweet.
I did this drawing maybe… hmmm… 2 years ago, from this portrait of GD Anastasia Romanov of Russia. I think it’s one of the best things I’ve drawn so far. I wish I had more time for drawing. :(
Oh, and Sly, that Raven logo is super cool with the splatters. RT3’s math class sketch perfectly expresses how I tend to feel during math class, too.
YAY! Nice picture, Amelie!
I like the slidey effect when you click ‘show’.
Nice shading of her face; makes her look realistic. Very nice. :D
That’s really good, Amelie. :O
It’s great! Wow, I wish I could draw well…
:) Thanks, y’all. (No, I’m not from Texas, or really even the south, I just say “y’all” sometimes)
I am working on a spaceships, and will post when completed. If I ever get past all the nit picky details, that is.
Some of my latest stuff:
Stegosaurus and Diplodocus
T. Rex chasing Labocania
T. Rex roaring over dead Carnotaurus
Kelenken, a giant predatory bird that roamed South America
That is quite awesome. I need to absorb your mad art skillz.
Wow, Amelie, love your picture of Anastasia.
@ BrandonP: I have to show your art to my little brother. He used to draw dinos all the time, but since he’s only ten and not much interested in the art as much as the dinosaur, it’s obviously not as good.
I love photography, so here’s one of my pictures from today:
Some editing done – tint fixed, and a diffused glow along with a vignette effect.
This I did real quick as some fan art for an MMO – Earthrise. I would go on but I got bored with it.
That’s a really cool spaceship, Virgil. Did you use a marker to go over the line art?
No. That was done entirely with a graphics tablet and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.
Fix’d. Put ! around the link.
Geometric shapes are the best when sizing and laying things out, good work.
My latest:
Her head is actually pretty hard to draw, especially for someone who hasn’t had a lot of practice drawing felines.
KITTEH!!
I mean, a very good drawing of a most threateningly perfect predator. Congratulations!
Here are grayscale drawings of some of my characters from “Strongjaw”:
Strongjaw the T. Rex
Twoscar the Allosaurus
Spikeswiper the Stegosaurus
Ipuy the priest
Looks good, but you might want to push less on your shading, if you blend the lines together you’ll get an even fill, without all those directional lines. Try doing small, light circles. :D
I am stunned.
I second that!
Mad Hatter was the best.
Willard Wigan is awesome.
“I inhaled Alice.”
Yeah, lol.
Some more of my stuff…
Pharaoh Tutankhamun
Barbarian Woman
Tribal Archer
The Egyptian goddess Isis
You are good at drawing noses, BrandonP.
^ Thank you.
Egyptian Sorceress
Egyptian Archer
Queen Nefertiti
Today a guy who’s also an artist saw me draw the archer, and he suggested that I render the skin tones with softer pencils than the mechanical pencil I usually work with. I’ve tried his advice and from now on I am going to follow it.
For shading, may I recommend Q-Tips? They work on charcoal and even #2 pencils, and they get rid of the lines and blend them together. They do take off and absorb some of the color, though.
Fingers and qtips are ok to shade, but you should really learn to do it straight from a pencil. Small, light circles.
For shading I first began using my fingers, but you need loads of graphite to make it worthwhile. Then I bought some blenders (those pointy rolled-up-paper things) and they worked really well. When I ran out of them, I tried rolling my own paper, or just using a scrap and rubbing it on the drawing surface, and that seemed to work fine too. Blenders are really nice for areas that need to look smooth or silky. Or for places where the shading has to be really light, and I find it very difficult to get that from a pencil. I like them for doing hair and faces.
Of course I shade first with the pencil, but use the blender to smooth it over, for texture purposes.
Some more of my stuff:
Egyptian woman in a jungle
Hebrew warrior
Apep, a monster from Egyptian mythology
Generic African woman
T. Rex Hunting
Numidian warrior woman (the Numidians were a people in northwest Africa who were used as mercenaries by the ancient Carthaginians)
Cryolophosaurus
Triceratops preparing to crack open a coconut
Desert Tribeswoman
Another Egyptian Jeebus, a little warning please?
Moorish Babe
Dinosaur Huntress
Giganotosaurus
This is a robot that I did while bored (and it was the assignment) in class. For you tech junkies, done with Maya 2009, primarily with toruses and cylinders. Deceptively easy… I plan to put in gatling guns tomorrow.
The missiles look a lot less like a jetpack with it blown up like this…
I don’t think it ever looked like a jetpack to begin with.. but what do I know?
I just hoped it was a jetpack. ;_;
Jetpacks are indeed awesome.
And they grant flight, which is even more so.
Why would a jetpack have depleted uranium teflon coated cyanide tipped titanium 30 kiloton warheads!!
Because there’s a rocket launcher attached to the jetpack!
D:
It has to have a sundae maker in it too.
My little sister showed me some of her Doctor Who art today… XD
I’ve never seen Doctor Who, but that is sweet.
Ooh, 3D art. I can’t resist showing off my forty thousand polygon master piece of organic modeling. Took more than two weeks. <_< Unfortunately, it’s untextured.
Forty thousand!
[dies]
Looks bloody good though. In Max, yes?
@ Spanman:
That is Epic Win TM. Words can’t describe how awesome that is. :D
Thanks. :D And yeah, 3DSMax. I think it’s gone through a number of upgrades since I last used it…
Hopefully I can start doing some worthwhile things soon.
I’d been at it for over a year, so it might take a while. Organic modeling is so difficult. It made me wistful for the days when we did easy stuff like cars. :P
Organic modeling is incredibly hard. Try Zbrush, though, and flip on the X mirror, then organic becomes fun.
@ Spanman:
That is Epic Win TM. Words can’t describe how awesome that is. :D
I told her that too, but she thought I was lying. I’ll hook you up. You two would be a great match.
Woah. Trop cool Sly. :D

I do origami, floral design, and draw occasionally (and crap-ily).
Wow, both of those are amazing. If that’s crap-ily, you have high expectations. :P
Deviantart wouldn’t load, but the origami is still ridiculously amazing!
Same. ‘tis epic.
Hey, Virgil, you do Maya? So does my mom. :D
@ Sly: Your elf/thing looks awesome!
Yesh, we learn Maya.
You can take classes? That’s cool.
Of course, I suck at anything computer-related, unfortunately for my dad. He wants me to be able to program. :P
Programming is hard..
Wow, Slyshy. :O Completely amazing.
@ SlyShy
That’s amazing. How long did it take to make that?
Anyway, if I may pimp more of my own work…
Another Hebrew warrior
European tribal warrior woman
European tribal male warrior
Allosaurus
African woman with sabers (the sabers were based on a central African design)
African-American babe
T. Rex again
Egyptian chick with spear
Triceratops
Yay! I discovered the awesome power of Booleans!!! Weeeee! I’m thrilled.
This is a big pic, and I was just bored (again) in my modeling class. I do plan on adding some more doodads and whatnot in there.
Hm.. it seems to be cutting off. Here is the full link.
Niiice. What’s it supposed to be?
I agree. It is niiice.
@ Romantic Vampire Lover
I think it says something about a “Gatling Gun.”
Yes, its a gatling gun. I have since added a handle.
I see you..
Nooooooo! My flawless disguise has been compromised!
Indeed it has. You have no choice but to do acts of questioning morality in my service. [maniacal laughter]
...
How questionable are we talking, here?
Dunno. Have you seen the Chaser’s War on Everything?
Ooh! thanks for reminding me, I was going to show my friend the homosexual dwarf tonight. :D
Sadly, no. Pretty sure I’ve heard of it, though.
Oh, the homosexual dwarf bit is great. Fuck you dad. :D
