I’ve heard a bit about various paintings people here are doing, or going to do. So I thought, here is a place to put up pics of our work, for critique (or not).
Or simply for discussion about technique, etc.

  1.

On that topic, I did a self-portrait today, and it’s the best I’ve ever done! I’ll try to scan it on here, but first I have to get it from the jaws of death… AKA my art teacher’s grasp…

  2.

I mostly do pixel art. Here are a few of my better ones:

Here’s a sketch I did when I was bored in math class. I think you can even see the characters on the front of the worksheet. XD

For the primary logo I’m going back to the old skool plain logo. But what’s above will be a t-shirt.

The direction I was going with the redesign is being changed again. I suck… but getting a classy look down is kind of hard. :/

Looks good, but you might want to push less on your shading, if you blend the lines together you’ll get an even fill, without all those directional lines. Try doing small, light circles. :D

    ^ Thank you.

    Egyptian Sorceress
    Egyptian Archer
    Queen Nefertiti

Today a guy who’s also an artist saw me draw the archer, and he suggested that I render the skin tones with softer pencils than the mechanical pencil I usually work with. I’ve tried his advice and from now on I am going to follow it.

  13.

For shading, may I recommend Q-Tips? They work on charcoal and even #2 pencils, and they get rid of the lines and blend them together. They do take off and absorb some of the color, though.

    •
      CommentAuthorVirgil
    • CommentTimeAug 20th 2009

Fingers and qtips are ok to shade, but you should really learn to do it straight from a pencil. Small, light circles.

For shading I first began using my fingers, but you need loads of graphite to make it worthwhile. Then I bought some blenders (those pointy rolled-up-paper things) and they worked really well. When I ran out of them, I tried rolling my own paper, or just using a scrap and rubbing it on the drawing surface, and that seemed to work fine too. Blenders are really nice for areas that need to look smooth or silky. Or for places where the shading has to be really light, and I find it very difficult to get that from a pencil. I like them for doing hair and faces.

Of course I shade first with the pencil, but use the blender to smooth it over, for texture purposes.
