Prequel video to the first episode of the second half of the season.

Nothing too huge, and not really any spoilers for the rest of the season (as far as I could tell, anyway), so it’s safe to watch. And I could even see it in the US, so I don’t think it’s restricted by country.

I love Doctor Who! In my Yearbook class this past year, we secretly did a Doctor Who themed Yearbook (the theme was “Don’t Blink,” it had a giant eye on the cover, and we hid in-jokes throughout the yearbook). I was pretty much the only person in the class who had never watched Doctor Who, so my boyfriend and friends got me into it. I just finished watching the entirety of the new series the other day. Looking forward to the 27th! “Let’s Kill Hitler!”

That’s what all the Doctor Who fans at my school thought. Plus the yearbook was a really big hit with everyone who wasn’t in on the joke, so it was a success. I felt left out during the making of it, so I had to watch the show.

Indeed, none of my yearbooks were all that interesting.

My brothers have not yet got me watching Doctor Who, because there’s just so much of it! and I’m a complete-ist.

However, I am making my middle brother the scarf from season 16.

Ahaha, excellent! That was my first episode too.

fwiw, you could start with season 5. It’s a good starting point. Or season 3, that’s another fairly decent places to start. Those seasons in particular began without needing too much knowledge of the ones before. And then once you’re hooked you can watch the rest at your leisure. ;)

Speaking of being a completist, though, DW is unusual for me in that it’s one of the only shows I actually watched out of order. Ordinarily, I have to start at season 1 episode 1 and watch all the way through, but I was able to watch Doctor Who partly out of order. Which only goes to show how much I liked it. :D

I think that’s the next episode we watched…with Amy Pond? Those angels freaked me out. I actually shrieked aloud at least twice…and I know my brothers yelped at the same time. But I’m already vulnerable to moving statuary.

But yes, I’m a completist too, which is why I’ve been chary of starting, but if any show allows it, it’s probably DW. :)

That’s because Neil Perryman is a brilliant. He used to hang out with our Farscape group occasionally, back when he first started Tachyon TV.

Guy is really funny and a top bloke.

NOT LONG NOW. Re-watching the last three episodes to get myself psyched. IT’S SO EXCITING. 8D

That video really impressed me the first time I saw it, apart from anything, it’s interesting to see his style of Doctor directly contrasted with Matt Smith. Even though he’s reading the script cold, the differences are still fascinating.

Anyway, have read The Auton Invasion and am convinced I adored the Third Doctor. Begun The Twin Dilemma and OH MY GOD it’s appalling. I’ll struggle through, but I think I might not be a fan of the Sixth Doctor. :|

That’s an awesome graphic. And it only serves to remind me that I really need to watch some Tom Baker episodes.

  30.

This theory just came to me: Say that Terry Nation never worked on Doctor Who. While he wasn’t the creator of the show, he may as well have been given how he brought the Daleks to the series. Without the popularity of the Daleks, the show would have ended at its originally scheduled run of 13 episodes. Given BBC’s policies, most, if not all, of those 13 episodes would be wiped, therefore turning Doctor Who into a mythic footnote in SF television history.

And here’s where the theory materializes: What would change about science fiction, fantasy, British television, literature, and countless other genres and mediums had Doctor Who never existed?

    D:

    That is a terrible thought.

I’m guessing scifi wouldn’t be as popular, just in general. Or time travel.

  31.

My attempt to talk about an old Doctor Who episode via twitter:

Watching Kinda. Kinda is kinda weird, but at least it’s doing something for Tegan’s character.

Also, it feels like the old guy and the villain are perving over Adric.

Kinda wish Moffat could write trippy shit like this.

What the Hell’s Nyssa doing during all of this?

Yeah, Captain Jack’s no longer the first openly LGBT companion of Doctor Who anymore.

    And neither is Ace.

    That guy’s got bleeding teeth.

Interpretative dance is always the best to fight robots.

Absolutely perplexes me how anyone could say this was miles better than current Who though.

The writer was really obsessed with jack-in-the-boxes, wasn’t he?

Everything’s so goddamn white in 80s Doctor Who.

    YOU CAN’T MEND PEOPLE!

00s = Future is brown. 90s = Future is black (and Japanese). 80s = Future is so fuckin’ white.

    Fuck Adric.

Maybe the Doctor can take in Luke now that Sarah Jane’s gone and use him as a better Adric.

    MIRRORS! MAH WUN WEEKNUS!

You were all scared over a rubber snake?

I’d like to know why a movie is necessary, anyway. The TV show is doing fantastic, why do you even need a movie?

Yeah… so is it just going to be this completely separate thing, like there’s the TV show with its stuff going on, and then there’s alternate movie Doctor Who with other stuff going on? That just sounds weird. It sounds more like what happens when one country remakes another country’s show, not like what movies from TV shows usually are.

I guess so. The article I read was basically like “we’re not going to use anything from the show at all, we’re going to reinvent/reinterpret it.” Which… is kinda scary.

  34.

And they’re bringing… Americans to write it. Just because someone can use the word “bloody” and “wicked” a lot in their scripts doesn’t mean they can make something authentically British.

Yeah. That’s another concerning thing. Doctor Who is so… well, British. Trying to make DW without the Britishness would be impossible; trying to fake the Britishness just seems like a very risky thing to do.

But hey, maybe we’ll all be pleasantly surprised and it will be awesome. shrug

  35.

Timelash was the worst thing I have ever seen. It is so bad it makes me ashamed to be a Doctor Who fan. The writing was so unbelievably sexist. The production values were fucking awful. Its twist was that the bad guy looked like this half-hippo guy who controlled a robot Sean Connery. And out of nowhere, HG Wells is cast as an annoying little prick.

My fears for the movie have been quashed, because I know they can’t do as bad as this.

Watched The Hungry Earth a day or two ago.

Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows, but the acting in it has always bothered me. It seems like the characters are either overreacting and melodramatic or simply not showing any emotion at all. And I’m not quite sure I like Amy so far, the new Doctor is better than I expected, though.

  36.

You just got to Eleven? Yeah, I’ve noticed that it’s not the most well-acted show, but it’s fun, so I can overlook it. The effects weren’t that great at the beginning, IMO (the weird plastic people from the pilot), but they’ve gotten a lot better.

And I go back and forth with Amy. I liked her okay at first, but then she irks me, and it would be nice if she disagreed with the Doctor a little more often. This past season, has finally got me liking Eleven okay.

I really liked Amy in “The Girl Who Waited,” but then they went back to the status quo at the end, so….

On an unrelated side note, my dad and I talked about subjects that could’ve possibly inspired the concept behind the Weeping Angels after explaining the Blink episode to my mum. We decided that fear of death was probably the most logical inspiration for the angels.

Ugh, the angels. Sure, they’re a creepy concept, but they’re so concretely defined except for the one key element (whether they have to know you’re looking at them to stop moving or not) that none of the stories I’ve seen with them made sense.
