Hey, I hid the comment. Plus, I didn’t give any details.

But one would think you were only commenting on the episode we were talking about and not revealing things that happened afterward. Just sayin’. It doesn’t bother me that much.

So….until today, I’d only heard of Doctor Who. But my Philosophy teacher is a huge fan, and since it’s the Friday before Halloween, he showed us one of the creepier episodes (“Midnight”).

    And now I’m hooked.

Any other good episodes I should watch to become more acquainted with the series?

  3.

If you’re in a hurry, “Blink”, “The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances”, “Human Nature/Family of Blood”, “Dalek”, and “The Girl In The Fireplace” are good for a gateway.

Now someone give me some Old!Who and Audio!Who to watch and listen.

In case there are any Americans who want to catch up on the show both for free and legally, BBC America is starting over replaying all the shows on Wednesday. It’s pretty much every weekday at 4:00 pm central time, though occasional they have more than one episode per day. They also come on the next morning at 9:00 am central time.

    The Pandorics Opens/The Big Bang:

    So, ratings go:

    Ten>>>>>>>>>>>>>Nine>>>Eleven
    Donna>>>Martha>>>>>Amy>Rose

The number of greater-thans indicates how much I like one over another.

I’m really only guessing that I would like Amy more than Rose if she had been with Ten at all. Eleven is okay, but not great. I got used to Ten by the end of his first season, but not Eleven. With Ten being gone, I actually think I would like Rose if only for the familiarity. I like Amy a lot at times, but at other times (when she jumps the Doctor), she kind of bugs me. I like Rory a lot though.

(Yes, I know, opinion is subjective…)

I see. I have a strong dislike of Ten – David Tennant annoys me somehow – so it was really easy to like Eleven. I wasn’t too struck with him when I first saw the casting news, but then I saw an interview where he kept waving his hands around in what to me seemed a very Doctor-ish manner, and from then on, he seemed to click as the Doctor in my mind.

It’s weird, but I preferred David Tennant as Hamlet to David Tennant as the Doctor. He’s a hilarious actor, but maybe too passionate. It makes him almost hard to watch after a while. I love the subtlety Matt Smith brings to the role.

I love Matt Smith. He’s just so funny and cool. On the flight there was a blurb about him as an actor for Doctor Who, and it was funny, to say the least.

  14.

“My poncho boys – if we’re gonna die let’s die looking like a Peruvian folk band”

I absolutely busted my gut at that one. Another great one was that Vampires of Venice one, “I’m a Time Lord. You’re a… big fish. Think of the children.”

I also love him wearing the sunglasses, can’t remember what episode, and he just looks so wrong in them, but manages to wear them exactly the way the Doctor would. Which is wrongly.

  19.

Hey, take comfort, swenson. Doctor Who might end first.

Hey, what do you guys reckon’ll happen when Doctor Who runs out of incarnations? Matt Smith’s signed on for three seasons, so after that there’s only 2 more incarnations to go before he runs out of lives.

  20.

The writers will probably make up some explanation such as “Well, the Time Lords are gone, so the Doctor doesn’t need to follow their silly rules!” or “The Time Vortex gets unleashed again and resets the Doctor’s incarnation to the first.” or something else entirely. Neither the BBC nor the fans are really willing to let the Doctor truly die.

Or he runs into some mystical power that resets it, or whatever. It would be kinda interesting, if done well, if his last incarnation has some overarching story about trying to figure out how not to die. I think it could make for some interesting stories.

That sounds cool in theory. Although the impression I have is that by that time he’s facing death for the last time, he’d probably be like, ‘I’m ready to go’. Or something about the natural order of things not being wrecked and this is his time to die. What do you think?

I think that if he said that and meant it, Great Britain would go into mourning for the next thousand years, as well as an awful lot of the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, I think you’re kind of right. He tends to be mostly accepting of his fate. On the other hand, that’s always because he knows he’s coming back anyway. Or maybe there would be some hugely terrible thing that only he can stop, which makes him try to extend his regenerations? That would fit more than just “I don’t want to die”.

    Also, LOVE IT, Marquis!

  23.

@ swenson: although I just remembered that when Tennant!Who regenerated into Smith!Who, he was actually quite “I’m not ready to go yet.” So maybe he’ll get more and more like that as the series goes on.

I like the idea of the hugely terrible thing only he can stop.

  24.

“I’m not ready to go yet.”

I was going to mention that but didn’t for some reason. It was sad. :(

He also got really angry at Donna’s grandpa for minute.

I think that he would get like that as he was approaching actual death. It would make sense for him to be ready to go, but I also think that longer he was able to live, the scarier it would be as he got close to the end, unless he was just really miserable or something.

  25.

I also think that longer he was able to live, the scarier it would be as he got close to the end, unless he was just really miserable or something.

Maybe that was partly why he didn’t want to go from Ten to Eleven in the first place? Because he’s getting closer to the end, and he knows his time is running out? The man who can go anywhere in time, but his own time is running down…

That article was based on a throwaway line by the Doctor in SJA when he was questioned about his regeneration by Clyde. And they were in the middle of escaping.

The last paragraph of the article is most important:

The BBC would not say whether there would be any further explanation. “We never comment on future storylines for Doctor Who,” said a spokeswoman.

It’s common sense to say they’ll be bypassing the regen. limit, but it hasn’t exactly been confirmed.

    Hahaha, that’s awesome.

I do still wonder about the crossing timelines thing. I think the problem was more that Rose changed something than that she went back in her own timeline… but that still doesn’t explain why the Doctor could clearly and obviously change Scrooge’s timeline (I can’t remember his real name) and even let him meet himself without it causing some terrible rift in time and space.

Although Ten did meet Five, so there’s that…

  33.

Also, Eleven didn’t want Amy and Rory to interact with their older selves. But Amy was allowed to interact with little Amelia, but I could let that slide because the universe was basically being ripped apart.

Basically, It seems like you can only cross timelines if it’s convenient for the plot.

I’m about a year behind… more like nine months or so…. but I watched last years Christmas special, which was cool because I understand now why its so hard for him to accept regenerating, I watched The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below. I liked them both enormously. I did notice that the music changed and I really like it. Matt Smith is an excellent Doctor, the role seems to fit him quite naturally—he’s so quirky. I do like Amy Pond, she’s very quick minded and seems to understand the Doctor more than any of the other companions did at first. I hope that there is no love story line planned between the two; I hope they are just good friends.

I don’t like being so behind—I’ve waited since February to watch this.
    Off to watch more: :D

Donna is the most amazing woman in all of Doctor Who, so screw you, RTD. I may accept it and be glad at her ending BUT IT WAS SHALLOW AND DOESN’T MAKE UP FOR JOURNEYS END.

  46.

Donna is the most amazing woman in all of Doctor Who

I agree. She’s my favorite. She’s different than the others, and she doesn’t have a crush on the Doctor. Rose and Martha both did. Amy… eh. Not that much, and there is Rory, but there was a little crushing, I think. She also seems to have a lot of depth to her character, not saying that the others don’t, but she seemed to have a little more.

I may accept it and be glad at her ending BUT IT WAS SHALLOW AND DOESN’T MAKE UP FOR JOURNEYS END.

Do you mean in “The End of Time”?

“Journey’s End” irritates me so much because they made it so that she can never come back. Martha could have a guest spot, and I would really like her to. Rose probably not, but that’s okay.

I keep editing this, but I saw this on Wikipedia, and I’m so glad it didn’t happen.

Executive producer Russell T Davies at one time dismissed Donna’s potential as an ongoing companion due to her abrasive personality, saying that “she’d get on your nerves”.[15] In fact, the character was not originally scheduled to return at all. In Davies’ original conception of the fourth season, it was one-off character Elton Pope (Marc Warren) from 2006’s “Love & Monsters” who was to become the Tenth Doctor’s last ongoing companion.

I did not like “Love and Monsters,” and Elton annoyed the hell out of me.

but she seemed to have a little more.

Definitely. That line in Journey’s End

makes me cry every time. And likewise, I thoroughly enjoy the friend aspect of their relationship, we don’t need romance all the time, and it frustrates me that males and females can’t seem to be platonic friends on TV. Donna showed that they could! and that’s awesome!

Do you mean in “The End of Time”?

Yes. scowlface. Shaun is wonderful, but, LEE. LIBRARY LEE. A missed thread there that makes me so sad. And, just, well, her reward, of course it’s wonderful and would be the first thing I would want to do for Donna. But it is superficial compared to what she achieved as companion.

Martha could have a guest spot, and I would really like her to.

Now that really makes me frustrated. You’re right, Martha could have come back — she could have been the Doctor’s contact in UNIT, but nooooo. Noooooooooo. You just have to tie up two characters in the easiest way you could possibly think of, and not even THINK about the consequences for other characters including my beloved TOM ELLIS. (Cenred, for those Merlin watchers).

I did not like “Love and Monsters,” and Elton annoyed the hell out of me.

Aww, I loved him. :) And I loved that episode — I’m sure I’ve babbled on about it before, but it was a great episode showing the consequences of the Doctor’s actions and what gets left behind. It was when I started liking Jackie, actually.

Buuut, I agree that it would have been a bad idea. I thought Elton was great, but, just not as strong-willed as the others. I know the Doctor helps people to grow, but the new series ones already have a backbone to begin with. :/ I would go along with it, though, because I think it could have been interesting.

I like that aspect, but I just don’t like the way they did it.

Jackie was annoying at first, but I ended up liking her.

Same. I hated her at first, but I started like her more the worse Rose made her feel. I felt bad her, and then her character seemed to develop out of that so that she was actually likable because she cared so much when Rose treated her so poorly, even though they tried to make it seem like Rose was more caring than she actually was. That’s what made me start to like Jackie, Mickey the same way. And then I started liking them for other reasons as their characters were actually developed.

  48.
