Because we’re still a critique site… but we’re not doing so much of that anymore.
We’re still a sporking site… but aside from Maradonia, this aspect is all but dead.
We’re still a writing site… but nobody’s posting much of their writing, and the fun threads far outnumber the writing threads.
And meantime, everybody’s had a good laugh and made a lot of friends.

And I’m curious about something: what are we becoming? What do we keep coming back for? What is ImpishIdea to you? What do you want to see more of? What would you prefer to see less of?

I think these questions have been simmering around here for a while now, and I reckon it’d be nice to have a go at answering them

II is becoming a fun, awesome community where everyone can get together and talk about what they’re passionate about, what their thoughts are, etc.

I keep coming back because this is a social but mature site where I can talk with respect and get respect in return. It’s interesting when I read all the conversations and I can take part in it. It’s a break from high school life and I like how this is a forum based on media, literature and things like that (although we haven’t really been doing much in the writing/sporking/critiquing(?) aspects).

ImpishIdea, to me, is a friendly, awesome, mature and respectful website where I can get help with writing, learn more about writing, improve my writing, learn more things in general (e.g. weapons) and talk with people that I enjoy being around (in a sense). But it also allows me to ‘socialise’ in a way and not only II is a writing website, it’s much more. It’s a community where I belong and I feel comfortable here, even though everyone (except a few) are basically strangers to me, but they’re also friends in a way. There are so many interesting conversations about several things and you can add something to the pool of knowledge, or you can learn something from those conversations.

You can make friends or acquantainces (is that how you spell it? My mind’s fuzzy today), and you get to know people. For the introverts, II is a good way of socialising.

To be honest, to me, II is more than what I can say.

I wouldn’t prefer to see less of anything here on II ‘cuz II is perfect the way it is, but it wouldn’t hurt to see an occasional story (even if it’s a short story) or a poem every now and then.

I tend to come back because for me it’s a social site with a marked interest in literature that is encouraged by the atmosphere, attitudes and activities of the forum and groups. That’s largely how I see it.

I will never be one to put my own work up, because I’m (a) too slow/inconsistent a writer, and (b) extremely private about such things. Only a few very close trusted friends get too see much of my stuff.

And I don’t have much time for critiquing other people’s work, between my full-time job, kung fu, housekeeping and my own writing efforts. I use my internet time as social/debate time, because it’s the only time I have for it and the only platform/media for it.

tequila deer version: I come here for the people, mostly, and the literary-minded community atmosphere they bring.

By all means, though, you guys make your own minds up whether to increase the debates/discussions and critiques if you want to. Just because I’m a curious cross-breed of slacker and perfectionist and have very little social time, that doesn’t mean the rest of you have to slack off to keep pace :P

I feel like this is the majority view. I agree with this as well. In fact, the forum is mostly fine, except we could be discussing a bit more about actual writing, even if we’re not critiquing or something. I think it’d be fun to set up an II book club- give everyone a month to read a book, and then devote a thread to discussing/debating it. It would build our community as well as give us a jumping place to discuss books and writing.

The main site is the real issue here. As much as I love sporks, I feel like that shouldn’t be our main purpose. Of course, for our site to be full of helpful how-to articles about the fantasy/sci-fi genres, or whatever else you want to do, that actually requires people to write articles, and again everyone is busy. What kind of articles do people want to see on the site? Like I said, I think that more articles actually devoted to IMPROVING your writing would be a great thing.

I was going to write an article featuring Terry Pratchett and the use of humor as a literary tool, specifically to counteract the abundance of admittedly bitter and sarcastic sporks on the main page. But I’m a noob. Am I allowed to write something?

    YES.

I love Impish Idea because it’s a literature-minded community with a great, friendly atmosphere. I can see that we’re starting to drift away from the old focus on criticism, and a lot of that is due to people becoming busy, so that II and even writing become secondary to the rest of their daily lives. It’s happened to me; I’ve been meaning to write an article for II for the longest time, but I’ve never gotten around to it because I keep putting it off until I’m less busy. Which doesn’t happen.

Incidentally, right now the only topic I feel confident enough in to write an article about is agriculture. An examination of agriculture in fantasy/sci-fi literature would be interesting too me, but I’m not sure about everyone else :/

    I’d be interested.

    Same.

And yes, articles devoted to improving your writing would be great. But since everyone’s short on time, I don’t think many people can do it. I’d do it, but I don’t have any knowledge of good writing to start with.

    This.

I was going to try and write an article about recognizing plot holes as they are occurring or before they happen. I just haven’t gotten around to thinking that hard about it yet.

I don’t read the sporks this often, and stopped doing my own one of Breaking Dawn, for precisely this reason. So, yes, if you have something to share, then please share it!

Please write this. It sounds fascinating.

So I’m kind of a new member, because I keep disappearing, but I keep coming back because of the community, of course, but I like the discussions on the main site as well. Honestly, I’m a fan of the sporks, because the commentary always gives me great ideas for my own work. Especially when the sporker starts talking about sociology or psychology or history, what have you…having never felt competent to write in the true fantasy genre, it actually gets me writing, because I know some of that stuff myself.

I’ve had several ideas for articles (the best of which I can’t remember) but since I’m not good at sticking around it seemed presumptuous to ask. Also, I hardly think I write well or widely enough to tell others how to do it, though I suppose I have an in as a very wide reader :)

More articles would be nice, especially on the analysis/deconstruction side—not like sporks, but with lots of different examples and with length. I like words. I’m not busy though, so if you’re willing to let me write an article I can try and remember my awesome idea…or come up with better ones.

Please write this. It sounds fascinating.

    ^^seconded!

I have some vague idea of doing an article on ‘Fantasy as Literature’, but I’m kind of busy with my own book right now, so I doubt I’ll get around to it.

I remembered my article idea…I thought it might be interesting to talk about how to write about a reader. Example: Meyer, unsuccessful: Rowling, successful, etc.

  7.

You mean Bella fails and Hermione wins, right?

That would be interesting. DO IT.

  8.

As soon as the first chapter/part/episode of either one of them is finished, I’ll put up my Rescudons-spork, my MI analysis and (unless it takes too much space, which it most probably will…) my new WiP.
    Yeah.
    :-)

  9.

I come to this forum because it’s one of the few places I feel like I belong. We’ve got a lovely community of nice (and literary!) people who are not total n00bs, and that is enough for me.

I come for I bring writing articles and criticism. The latter to come eventually.

Though truth be told, the community is the main draw. Even/especially when there’s lovely debate spats in the comments.

I come to this site…well mainly because Span is such an entertaining character! All of you are, it’s like watching a humour show, except in writing.

It also helps that since we all have a literary background, the community itself is intelligent, and that goes a long way to fixing the problems that other forums have in my opinion. When I first joined up, back when Matt decided to go ahead and make his own Inheritance Critique, I simply latched on because I was interested in another’s opinion on a book I had mixed feelings about. It fell into a weird niche where I sort of liked it and sort of didn’t, but got me to maddeningly consider whether others felt the same.

All that’s changed so much now, for the better methinks.

I keep popping in and out of this forum because to me it seems the spiritual successor to the anti-Shurtagal/ Dog-Eared community. (Probably because there's a few hold-overs from those communities that hang out here.)

I mostly frequent Team Liquid these days, but I like nosing around here every now and then as DE was the first online community I was ever involved and I learned so much about writing. It was also where I found so many like-minded lovers of books and story-telling. Nostalgia and similar interests I guess.
