Because a site like this should have one of these topics by now.

Also because, while I’m die-hard anti-slashfic, sometimes, the rules just have to be broken. Witness the awesomeness that is Old Spice Guy/Sassy Gay Friend...

As a diehard Catwoman fan, I have to say that Cat Tales is epically awesome, and I need to get caught up quickly. It starts off as your basic “Catwoman and Batman hook up” fic, but it’s done so well. The whole point is basically to say “OK, how can you make a relationship between the two work without making either act OOC?” And in the process, it’s also a very, very good re-imagining of the entire DCU that… fixes certain less-than-fan-approved events. And it’s been updating relatively regularly since 2001, with even a few spin-off fics by other people.

If that isn’t enough to convince you, then I should also say this is a fic series in which Batman’s rogues all hang out at the Iceberg Lounge (owned by the Penguin) and lie about getting beaten up by Batman when it was really Batgirl, Catwoman and the Riddler are very good friends except for when he’s hitting on her, and Harley and the Joker host annual Christmas parties for the other rogues. Don’t drink the punch.

This fic has its share of grammar and formatting issues, but it doesn’t matter. The content and the characters, even/especially the OCs, are just /flail/ and it’s an example of first-person done well. AU (-ish) as well, with how the author has further developed the world and given the Gerudo in particular a distinct culture.

Then again, it’s Legend of Zelda fic, so I may be biased.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by “Less Wrong”.

OMG you guys, this is possibly the best fanfiction there is. Ever. In any fandom. OF ALL TIME.

This is one of the only fanfictions I actually like. A Sue Hunter with Feanor at his best. I present Limyaael’s—of Fantasy Rants fame—The Game of the Gods!

You put whatever you want the title of the link to be inside the quotes (the “linktext” bit) and you have to take out the space between the final quote and the colon. Be sure Textile is marked below the textbox!

    @Taku

I started reading the Harry Potter fanfic. You’re right, its very good. I’m only to chapter nine. It’s very long and I don’t think I can finish it all in one night (at least not until I’ve finished homework). But I am incredibly intruiged by this story.

Anyone besides me ever read Those Lacking Spines?

I’m halfway now, and I think that it deserves the title of Best Fanfic Ever Written Ever.

    What fandom is that from?

  5.

    Kingdom Hearts.

I’ve never played that game (shock! horror! calm yourselves, folks!) but that doesn’t matter.
It’s overall very enjoyable – both clever and funny.
And there are too many shoutouts to other stuff to count.

An important critique of slash fiction

EDIT: Yes, yes, this is a major bump of the thread and you’ll probably want to close it, but the link has useful things to say about the nature of fanfiction (and porn).

I’m happy to not close the thread.

I’m also surprised I hadn’t mentioned Nightmares Of Futures Past before now. It basically takes the old fanfic cliche of adult Harry Potter travels back in time to fix all the plot holes/mistakes and save everybody’s lives, and shoves a post-traumatic stress Vietnam veteran into the role of Harry. It basically sets the standard for post-war and time-travel fanfic within the HP universe.

There’s some serious cheese, but it works well in concept, and isn’t overwhelmingly cheesy.

Isn’t Nightmares of Future Past actually one of the first of that genre, and everyone else is sort of playing follow the leader?

Battlestar Galactica fanfic The Long War

Rather than chase after the Galactica and look for Earth, the surviving human ships stay behind at the colonies and keep fighting the cylons. It’s a character driven war epic that’s formatted like a TV show.

I think I found the My Immortal of the Percy Jackson fandom: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9552184/1/Moon-Daughter

Sociopathic emo Sue who has her wardrobe described in painful detail and gets claimed by Artemis? Check. Hideous spelling and grammar? Check. Annabeth getting turned into a "grape wif no soul" because she catches Mr. D. looking at "kid pr0n" on Chiron's computer? Check.

Yeah, but Suethors tend to either ignore it, or use that to make them even more special.

Though…in the PJ Universe, she appears about thirteen-fourteen, so that’s actually really creepy.

  9.
The author seems to hand-wave it by saying Artemis is still a virgin. Somehow. And apparently she thinks you lose your virginity by kissing.

I suppose that depends on where you kiss, and with which lips.

... that was incredibly wrong. Lord, I apologise.

I was talking with someone on fanfiction about all the horrible Mary Sues there are today, and she led me to this

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9578829/1/Starkit-s-Prophecy-UNCENSORED

It’s basically My Immortal with cats. It features a love “dodecahedron”, whatever that is.

Well, a dodecahedron is a twelve-sided three-dimensional object. A “love dodecahedron” is essentially a more complicated take on the standard love triangle.

This is what you get from spending time on tvtropes.

I think a love dodecahedron would be interesting, but in this particular fanfic, it’s eleven characters lusting after one characters.

That sounds less like a love dodecahedron and more like a harem fic.

Understandable. But still, if they’re going to name-drop specific tropes, they should at least get them right.
