    Who do you write like?

My academic work got me Isaac Asimov. Yay!

  1.

I apparently write like James Joyce for a few of my works. Not knowing who he is, I put in another piece and got Vladimir Nabokov. :D And just for kicks, I did it again and got Dan Brown. D:

I got JK Rowling for my fiction writing, and Edgar Allan Poe for online comments. And then Oscar Wilde for academic writing? What?

Online comments got me Margaret Atwood, Dan Brown for academic work, James Joyce for Valentine poem to RVL, and H.P. Lovecraft for fiction. So that’s a nice mix.

    Ian Flemming for my fiction.

But, that was only for my Prologue. When I entered all I had written up to this point for Impish Writing I got Mark Twain.
When I entered all 501,51 words of my 2008 NaNoWriMo story I got Raymond Chandler.

And when I entered the above text I got Vladimir Nabokov.

My academic work got me Stephen King.

    I got…

Kurt Vonnegut for my humorous IW story
James Fenimore Cooper for my fantasy/western IW story
Chuck Palahniuk for my superhero story
    Dan Brown for my sci-fi ;_;
And I deleted all my academic stuff, sorry.

I got H.P. Lovecraft for my academic writing.

  3.
    Yeah.

Lame and ludicrous monsters but monsters nonetheless.

What I don't get is why I got Edgar Allen Poe'd on my comedy. I mean yes it got violent but even the violent part was more slasheresque than Poeish

Jane austin for my chic lit and my purple prose got me George orwell.

  4.

Dan Brown for my fiction. I am going to go die in a hole now, if you don’t mind.

My story is apparently like Raymond Chandler. I have no idea who that is.

My blog is like Jonathan Swift… this is acceptable.

  5.

Raymond Chandler’s like the forefather of hard boiled detective stories.

    O.o

Considering my writing is fluff, this makes no sense.

  6.

Dan Brown for my fiction. I am going to go die in a hole now, if you don’t mind.

I’m Dan Brown too, so that makes three of us now who are him. What a kick in the junk.

  7.

I can feel my self-esteem plummeting as I type.

I pasted in a few different passages of my stories, and got a different result every time.

    I got:

    L. Frank Baum, for a longish Dunsanian short-story, but when I pasted that story by chapter, I got first L. Frank Baum, then Dan Brown, then H.P. Lovecraft. I’m not sure whether to be surprised or ashamed.
Margaret Atwood for a few chapters of a surreal novel targeted towards very young children and for a long article I wrote about potatoes O_o
Vladimir Nabokov from an attempt at romantic comedy
Lewis Carroll for some whimsical fan-fiction I wrote for a contest

I’ve read all of those authors and they all have pretty different prose styles. I guess I’m… wildly inconsistent? Or just really bad?

Seems somewhat legit… I tried entering The Fellowship of the Ring and it said J. R. R. Tolkien. I was half expecting it to say “J. K. Rowling.”

I, personally, am happy with Ian Flemming.

When I entered a couple diary entry-style snippets, I got H. P. Lovecraft for one and Kurt Vonnegut for the other. But when I used typical third-person pieces from two different stories, I got Stephen King for both of them.

    Can’t really complain about that.

I want to see who Gloria Tesch writes like…

    cocks gun Ready…. Aim…

I write like Jane Austen. Should I be happy about that? (Since I never read any of her work before…)

  9.

Let’s just have us a suicide pact, SWQ. V, you want in on this?

  10.

@ No One: YES. Be happy! At least you are not equivalent by association to SMeyer.

@ sansafro: Suicide pact it is.

    Grins

Suicide? Why not homicide? I’ll be happy to be the one who pushes the victims over the edge…

  11.

Well, I tried a prompt response I wrote a while ago and apparently, it’s like William Shakespeare’s work. Of course.

    XP

    Maybe I shouldn’t care about this anymore…

    William Shakespeare? Cool!

  12.

And then I got Mark Twain.

What I’d really like to know is how this thing analyzes writing.

  13.

I’d imagine it’s based on things that can be easily quantified, readability indexes and such. Average letters per word, average words per sentence, maybe shared vocabulary or general vocabulary level.

  14.

I got Tolstoy for my Russian romance..

  15.

I copied the entire text of Foundation into it and got Douglas Adams.

Something tells me that this thing isn’t exactly reliable.

  16.

I got Dan Brown too, and I don’t know who he is, but from previous reactions, I’m guessing that he is terrible…. Wait just looked him up. Da Vinci Code guy. I’ve never read those.

Ooh, but to make it all better, I pasted a different section of my writing and got Stephen King. :D

And I just put in another part and got Stephen King again.

I just pasted a section from Maradonia. Apparently, Gloria Tesch writes like James Joyce.

    .....

Maybe that’s why she felt ready to publish?

  18.

I typed in the opening paragraph of Night (it’s the closest book to me). Apparently, Elie Wiesel writes like James Joyce, too.

For fun I pasted in The Eye of Argon and got William Shakespeare. My Immortal got J.K. Rowling (LOL). I agree with sansafro about how this thing works; it probably only analyses superficial similarities with other authors, like sentence length, overall wordiness, etc. It’s a fun tool, but I wouldn’t stake my life on it.

  19.

    My Immortal got J.K. Rowling

    How brutally ironic.

  20.

I got James Joyce when I put in a section from my Impish writing.

YES. THAT IS SO MUCH WIN!

My Immortal got J.K. Rowling (LOL).

I stand corrected. That is win.

  21.

I rarely write sci-fi/fantasy, so here’s my outcome.

    Fluffy/love: Charles Dickens
    Philosophical(ish): David Foster Wallace
    Academic: Margaret Atwood
Letters to someone: David Foster Wallace
That Valentine I wrote for II (to Moldorm): Arthur Conan Doyle

    Meh, not bad, methinks. ;)

Apparently, my work in progress is in the tradition of James Joyce? I do not see the correlation, but I still feel honored (as long as my WIP is like Dubliners and not so much Ulysses…)

My academic writing is like Dan Brown???!!! How the hell did I pass the IB History exam?

Wait…I just tried an AP English sample. Now I write like David Foster Wallace.

My letters are also like Dan Brown.

    I AM DOOMED.

I got David Foster Wallace on two of my better things and Dan Brown on the unedited NaNoWriMo manuscript.

I didn’t know who that was, but he comitted suicide two years ago? I’m not sure which one I’m feeling more concerned about…

    3 times out of 5, I got H.P. Lovecraft.

    Poetry critique: H.P. Lovecraft (...?)

Prologue to The Fox and the Prince: H.P. Lovecraft (What? o_O)

All of what I have written of TFatP so far: Vladmir Nabokov (Yay?)

    Blog post: Margaret Atwood (...?)

Short story about a giant, carnivorous slug: H.P. Lovecraft (Now this makes sense!)

So, bets on how long it’ll take me to craft the next Cthulhu? :P

I tested quite a few samples of my writing. It seems I write in a manner similar to Oscar Wilde, followed by Stephen King and Chuck Palahniuk for academic assignments. On one blogpost though, it said I wrote like Stephenie Meyer. Wtf?

But then again, the post was about Twilight. Hopefully, that’s the only reason.

  24.

On one blogpost though, it said I wrote like Stephenie Meyer. Wtf?

Twilight does read like a blog.

I got Jack London for one piece, James Joyce for another, and a fellow called David Foster Wallace for a third. I’m okay with this.

  25.

My essay on Jane Austen is written like… Jane Austen. I’m going to take out all the references to Austen and see if that makes a difference.

    Nope, still Jane Austen.

YESSS!! A pastiche I wrote of Jeeves and Wooster = writing like PG Wodehouse.
    non-romance fluff: James Joyce.
Opal/Cudgeon fic: Cory Doctorow. Um. Okaaaaay?
something I actually care about: Stephen King.

I know it is irrational to be happy about that last one, but I’m still happy :)
